The mankind has been able to fulfill one of her biggest dreams. The colonization of Mars. But the planet is only partially developed, the residents struggling to survive after the Earth government seceded from Mars and has imposed a trade embargo on all currently populated with alien creatures planet.

Zenn Scarlett is 17 and learns hard to fulfill her dream of becoming a Exoveterinarian, a veterinarian who specializes in hat..die treating exotic, extraterrestrial life forms, most of them big, some dangerous, and absolutely extraordinary. During her first year as a novice in the Exovet Clinic of Ciscan monastery Zenn encountered not only strange patient, but also learns to recognize their illness and injury and to heal.

But in the monastery itself smaller and larger accidents, which soon lead to the monastery and thus also the hospital threatened with closure accumulate. Because not all bring the extraterrestrial life forms enthusiasm and acceptance opposed, and would just like to see how the creatures from the surface of Mars disappear.

Now it's up to Zenn, find out the reason for all the strange events when they want to continue their education and want to preserve the existence of their family. Because this stands or falls with the monastery and his clinic. And so Zenn must not only use their learned skills in a manner to which they have not even dreamed of, but experienced first hand how strong and powerful can be empathy and compassion.

My Opinion:

Zenn Scarlett is the debut novel by American author and science-fiction fans Christian Schoon, to be published in May 2013 with Strange Chemistry.

With Zenn, is told from the perspective of the Roman, Christian Schoon puts the reader in front of a protagonist who is sympathetic one from the first moment. She is clever, a bit cheeky, and blessed with the talent to hineinzukatapultieren unintentionally in certain situations. And she loves alien creatures. This love that was her literally in the cradle, also meant that Zenn was admitted despite their age as a novice to train as Exovet.

Under the supervision of her uncle Otha Zenn learn everything they need to know as a veterinarian for Aliens and comes with the most wondrous creatures in contact. The giant Indra, with its red and gold shimmering scales that transport the starships. Whale Hounds, big as hay wagons. Rikkasets, small, cat-like beings who can make himself invisible by light refraction. And the Sunkiller, a two-headed creature with huge wings on their backs all the cities are built.

But besides all the fascination with these creatures, so do Zenn also of the dangers that lurk in the work as Exovet. Because her mother disappeared without a trace during the treatment of a sick Indra, and her father left the monastery shortly afterwards.

But this diminished Zenns enthusiasm for extraterrestrial creatures not. An enthusiasm, a love and fascination that has dug deep soul in Zenns.

However, the inhabitants of the monastery associated with their acceptance to aliens over to an almost forlorn. For most residents of the small town near the clinic to see the strange animals as a threat and want to eliminate fast as possible. Zenn itself is not immune to prejudice and is the Townern with due skepticism about, particularly the eighteen Liam Tucker, who goes to the inhabitants of the monastery at hand.

Zenn Scarlett is all in all a very quiet novel, despite a certain amount of fast-paced scenes. But this hurts the book is not in the least, on the contrary. This special blend makes the magic of Christian Schoons debut. Thus the reader gets here a tale of love offered to detail, with such a fantastic world that one has after completing the book probably just met a fraction of it.

The novel tells of prejudice and conspiracies of awaited revenge and desperate rescue attempts, and the fact that you have to fight in order to achieve its goals, spiced with a certain drama. Zenn is a wonderful protagonist, with which one can not only identify, but which grows immediately to my heart. And Liam sneaks into the heart of the reader, even if you just like Zenn, may not trust the city boys and quite believe.

Christian Schoon writes beautifully simple, but it manages to give rise in the mind of the reader a picture of a world that has us so strange and yet so familiar, full of wonder, full of danger, full of adventure. The story flows on, and compacted with time increasingly becoming a current whose pull we can hardly escape.

Zenn Scarlett is one of the highlights of the year 2013. A young adult novel, which does not require a far overshadowing love story for me. A novel that manages to captivate the reader in a different way and to inspire, with a history full of fantasy, drama, friendship and the touch of the great adventure. A novel that is worth reading.
