My Early Life: 1874-1904 (Paperback)

Customer Review

"My Early Life" was written by Winston Churchill in 1930. The autobiographical period described by its author covers his first thirty years of life, 1874-1904.

Son of a prestigious English aristocratic family, Marlborough (including a victorious ancestor on the soil of France at the Battle of Malpaquet, which was the subject of a children's song "Marlborough s'en va-t-en guerre - your Mironton Mironton mirontaine ... "but contrary to what is said, went back home and died in 1722), Winston Churchill was another privilege of having a mother, of American origin, very enterprising (from men) who facilitated his political tact, diplomacy needed in rough reports, proud that liked to create that ambitious young officer, rider, athletic, passionate Polo.

The adventure tempted him. He knew how to seize opportunities by volunteering to be sent to Cuba during the fighting for independence against Spain, then stayed in India, and, finally, fought against the Boers in South Africa. Soldier and political journalist, he regularly wrote dispatches for the British press, which, of course, cause some knew well placed ries, which include earned him never to receive the Victoria Cross.

The head of temperament, pugnacious, brave, enterprising (the story of his escape from the prison camp in South Africa is instructive) policy offers the prospect of a personality that is so necessary for history, at the beginning of World War II.

I naturally appreciated what will constitute a political line Churchil "parcere subjectis and debellare Superbs" which translates (in English, and I quote): "Spare the Conquered and war down the proud" - "I-have come to sccm Achieving this thought very near by my own untutored reflections. The Romans-have forestalled Often Many of my best ideas, and I must concede to the patent rights' em in this maxim. Indeed Never was it more apt than in South Africa. Wherever we departed from it, we Suffered;.. Wherever We Followed it, we triumphed (...) I always get into trouble Because So Few people take this line I Was ounce Abebooks web sites to currency year registration for a monument in France I wrote, "In. war, Resolution. In defeat, Defiance. In Victory, Magnanimity. In peace, Goddwill "The inscription Was not accepted It is all the fault of the human brain being white made in two lobes, one of only qui Does Any thinking, so Abebooks web are all right-handed or left-handed;.. Whereas if We Were Properly constructed shoulds we use our right and left hands with equal strength and skill selon Circumstances. As it is, Those Who can win a war well can make Rarely a good peace, and Those Who Could make a good peace Would never-have . won the war Perhaps It Would be pressing the argument too far to suggest That I Could do both "- p.331.

It is true that the intention is to qualify. Written in the late 1920s, he was de facto against the French policy in Germany, against Clemenceau, following all the recommendations of a British Keynes (The Economic Consequences of the Peace). And that recognized in Germany at the time, having lost the war? so strong resentment and shared that he will crush Hitler to power and democratic claims of other European nations. Churchill will be the man of heroic times. It will not be that of peace, contrary to what he thought of him.

In conclusion, the soul of a great leader is preciously we revealed in this dense book, well written, by the very man who was to honor the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953 and died, amused spectator of politics in 1965 .
