This Canada is part of a theme dear to Richard Ford, at least for the first part of the novel. Dell, indecisive teenager whose parents will commit a shabby robbery, is alone and abandoned, forced to flee to Canada. This experience of disillusionment, bitterness, disappointment, it is found in at least two other Ford of characters: Larry, the young protagonist of "Jealous" (whose French title is La border first new d 'A difficult situation) who, accompanied by his aunt leaves his father to find his mother on the occasion of Thanksgiving and whose train journey will initiation rite-like misfortune, and, of course, Joe of A burning season (including the absent father is a fugitive from justice), who will attend impotent the sinking of the couple's parents. In both novels (see my review), the author leaves us with his characters in this feeling of tearing. This time, Dell will cross the border, which is not only that of Canada, but also the journey towards adulthood. This theme of the border, the addition, that changes you for the better and the worse is also a constant in the work of Ford who readily admits that he still has an uneasy shiver when crossing a these limits it deems carry a potential tragedy. Facing reality of the world, it is the challenge of the second part of Canada, which is the least successful. But the last part, which combines Dell's voice 16 and that of the old man he became, seems to me the best Ford. Maybe not the ideal book for those who do not know this great writer (see A weekend while in Michigan or, again: A burning season), but for those who follow, a must ..
