An Offer You Can not Refuse (CD)

Customer Review

On one side Walter Horton, Big Walter Horton alias. On the other Paul Butterfield. Their common point? Both are pioneering harmonica and blues singers. The first is black, born in Mississippi and fellow Muddy Waters. He never reached the fame, but was one of the "harp" the most creative of the modern blues. He developed a unique style, is fluidity and softness. Since then, he is considered the equal of the references of the genre, Jacob Miller and especially Sonny Boy Williamson. The second is white, but the black blood flowing through his veins. It is the first white harmonica player to have merged the blues with rock, with Elvin Bishop and the rhythm section of Howlin 'Wolf (bassist Jerome Arnold and drummer Sam Lay), to be carried to the Pantheon and the like. His technique, rather unusual, consisted of a place in the back of the instrument (the bass notes right), which did not prevent him, as you can judge here to create original sounds and melodic tracks . The two virtuosos cross swords in a 1972 album, An Offer You Can not Refuse, released by Red Lightnin. Walter Horton hosts the first face, Paul Butterfield appearing in six runs in the second, recorded at Big John of Chicago (1963), the crucible of the American blues scene around a line-up consisting, in addition Butterfield, of Smokey Smothers (guitar), Jerome Arnold (bass) and Sam Lay (drums). Among them Got My Mojo Working and Loaded. The eight pieces of side A are without bass or drums, with the sole accompanist guitarist Robert Nighthawk: Easy instrumentals, West Side Blues have my favors with Louise and Tin Pan Alley on lequels Horton demonstrated good provisions vocals. In terms of harmonica and blues, this compilation proves to be very rewarding and particularly bright. It's a classic of its kind (PLO54).
