Imriel, Volume 1: The Legacy of Kushiel (Paperback)

Customer Review

To this comment I will take part in an analysis made it a few weeks ago (thank you to Althea) and devoted to the characters at Carey and the way they are camped and characterized. Phaedra, Josselin Ysandre, Mélisandre and Imriel course.

Phaedra has a very keen awareness of the "curse" hanging over her, but she lives with, knowing accommodate his absence it is well worth the horrors but also a lot of fun not to mention the honors and the rest: The service Naamah is still good when you rip straps that are equally your enjoyment and your fortune. His problem is not also so much in its masochism, known to all and publicly assumed, that being in love with both her protector (security, stability ... boredom?) And his worst enemy ( violence, pain, pleasure ... adventure?) this duality, otherwise rather mundane and often rebachée, here is finely exploited, at least in the 1 and the 2. 3 as I said is both "grand puppet "in some ways (although the translation is excellent) and incredible by others. I will not comment more besides.

Josselin appears to be more full. His mystical temptation for many. He is rejected by his order he must then turn to another religious quest as the one he loves making his life impossible. In the end his motto "I protect and I use" only summarizes the partially ... it's a little more cunning than that though ultimately it is with age it gets thick.

(Both are not just secondary characters here if the narrator is Imriel instead Phaedra as it will certainly already included.)

Ysandre is not a secondary or symbolic character. As Queen she personalizes Terre d'Ange, country or the symbolism is more than ever present (see the dance of the winter solstice and the role it plays there) and the protagonists of all these stories are essentially fighting for or against her and what she symbolizes. From this point of view the evolution of the tradition to the forefront and a certain modernity is a key point of the trilogy and even I see no difficulty in the suite. His relationship with Drustan reverses all conventions and founded the bulk of future plots. She deserves some closer analysis ... but at the expense of the action, so I suspect it was "edited out". Yet one second imagine a princess of the French renaissance fall in love with an Irish-Scottish lord with tattooed faces and with a club foot .... hmm ... not simple eh? It takes a little more than the depth to go beyond such appearances. Ysandre does not hesitate. To save his country first, out of love very quickly. That's all there is more unlikely ... but still it goes! "Love as thou will" ...

Mélisandre .... ah .... ... beautiful and cruel eyes like a summer sky at dusk, the black hair almost blue .... We know the mortally dangerous but I think Carey finds him (or want us to find him) mitigating circumstances. But frankly, there are none! She admits herself that if she does not kill Phaedra it is by mere superstition! The obsession seems to be shared because it is Melissandre itself Phaedra calls on his trail at the end of Volume 1 of the first trilogy. And she finally promises to withdraw from the game in exchange for the safety of his intrigues Imriel adopted son Phaedra and Josselin.

As for Imri ... Fruit of the loves of two traitors and assassins but third in the order of succession of the throne. Brought up in ignorance ancestry then kidnapped 10 years ago to find themselves in the heart of a kingdom of madness, torture and death before Phaedra and Josselin did ... was saved by the Rocambole as I wrote higher. Imriel is facing the roller coaster of life with a great courage and a huge desire to never disappoint his two saviors. IL Josselin admires and loves Phaedra first as a son, and when he fears that it does not change it prefried withdraw without really allow time to understand what is happening.

this novel is a novel learning: hers .... my judgment is thereby biased because I love these novels when they are well written and that imagination vies has the verve and action
It takes 14 years to 23-24 on the loose ... meanwhile he will have learned a lot about himself and about others, lost some friends and gained some others, including Eamon: another interesting character, I wish The next volumes we will deepen. Finally find the courage to empty a packed bag and to face what he hates and fears the most the same time.

If I have to find a fault ... I find qu'Imriel "heals" pretty good (understatement when one passes through the hell that was his in the previous volume) but after all if he has to cross 2000 conspiracy pages , trips and cavalcades of all kinds ... better tanner him some leather pretty quickly :)
