This book is a form of witness to kaleidoscopic shape (the time and place of the action intertwine virtuosement). Through his meetings and discussions with the heads of state (Nehru, Mao and De Gaulle) and reflections on art, his adventures, it is the eternal man (or Being) that Malraux research. Furthermore, one is struck by his relentless attempt to understand the other in all its difference (see his thoughts on India) on one hand and the impossibility of letting go of European cultural references (often compares the works views Asia to that of ancient Rome). Finally, the book ends with reflections on the extermination camps and the philosophical problem of evil that are reminiscent Elie Wiesel or Charlotte Delbo.
So this is a testimony of an impressive depth that I would like to work longer.
