- The establishment -
Connecting and start playing ... This is unfortunately also with a Wii U not (welcome to the new world of video games ...) updates etc. but keep at least within limits. Has a friend of mine a total of 2 full days needed to its new Xbox One with Forza Horizon 2 to get up and running (because of gigabytes of updates and what I know) so was the Wii U already satisfied with a larger and a smaller update ( time about 1 hour).
The included Mario Kart 8 also required an update from the Internet but also that was done fairly quickly. So also applies to the Wii U: A brisk Internet is simply a must! Just like a decent WiFi in the house. However, I feel that the implemented WLAN adapter is worse than the Wii - because although the new Wii U is at the same position as before the Wii, the reception is poor a lot ... What is also bothers me a little that for the sensor bar included no reasonable bracket. I have a pretty flat LCD TV, so I can not simply sensor bar on top place (the frame is on the edge barely 2mm deep and even rounded ..) there hangs the TV on the wall is a set including also impossible. That leaves only the sensor strip with tape and a homemade spacers to stick to the TV somehow above ... that's not really progressive I would have liked here a holder such as the TrackIR who has appropriate feet to just above a flat TV to be plugged or clamped / Monitor. Such a mechanism fits with broad as well as flat-panel televisions.
- The Wii U controller -
In the controller I was most excited about. He is actually quite large, but is very good in the hand and even after prolonged play, I can notice no problem. Only the battery life is a bit poor. After nearly four hours was over. Possibly builds the battery after a few charge / discharge cycles a little capacity, but overall you have to be said that such a large and bright display just takes its toll. The included charging cable has for a relatively long connecting cable, so you can quite easily fortunately also recharge while playing the controller.
What's really nice and I have also previously never before seen so is the opportunity to play the game completely on the controller. So my wife can eg watching TV and I still "on the side" play a round of Mario Kart or browse the Nintendo Store. That makes a PS4 not soon after ;-)
- Mario Kart 8 -
On the new Mario Kart I was also very curious. The (direct) predecessor I had once played on the Wii too, but I'm never quite happy with become. Me had always been very disturbed that the opponents have a so so bombarded with items that there was no tricks no chance to win - at least not by driving faster lap times that had somehow never promised me so well.
Well, that seems to have been improved at the 8th member. Here one still gets logically as Leading blue tanks etc. around the ears hewn (I mean hey, that's Mario Kart!), But not on the scale as yet at the 7th part. If you drive properly you can gain nonetheless, even if you will be shot down every now and then and so it should be in a racing game also.
What really amazed me, are the routes! They are really all the madness! Firstly, they are just pretty as a picture drawn on the other hand they are full of loving details and insane routes! What can I say, they are just fun! Here Nintendo has really delivered something what other racing games could take an example.
Everything else has been chewed by other reviewers, the many characters and many karts with all conversion options resulting in a decent variety so there is nothing to complain.
Mario Kart has always been a mandatory title for each generation of Nintendo consoles and is today still!
- Backward compatibility -
This is an issue for the Nintendo gets a lot of respect from me and followed by other manufacturers such as Microsoft or Sony quiet times could also learn a lot:
It can be the one to use all the hardware of the Wii on the Wii U! These includes the Wii U a "Wii emulator" whereby all Wii software can be played on the Wii U! This feature for me was definitely a reason to buy, and at the same time it is also one of the reasons why I have not gained any PS4 or Xbox One ...
The transfer of all digital content (downloaded Arcade Games, Scores, etc.) is also relatively simple and straightforward with a corresponding small (and free) software tool (must also here, for example, to buy from other manufacturers Extra stuff !! On this point, simply shows that Nintendo is still a very customer-friendly company which is not proscriptive buyers with unnecessary investments (why the hell a PS3 gamepad running eg not on a PS4 or a XBox360 ?? Controller on a ONE ??) so there is for someone who already owns a Wii hardly an argument not to switch to a Wii U!
- Games offer -
Here Nintendo has to offer, unfortunately, not quite as much exclusive. When I look at myself as the market, I will probably sooner or later even Zelda - Wind Waker HD set and Super Mario 3D World ... that was it but also already. For being so now is the Wii U already relatively long which is already quite lean from the offer. Here you can fortunately the time to new titles come out (such as Legend of Zelda) also very good to kill time with the older Wii titles and also the great arcade games.
- The bottom line -
If you can, for example, from the Mario and Zelda world to do something with the Nintendo-exclusive games, the Wii U is definitely a good choice. For those who prefer the console and PC Cross appear on shooting games or any other games such as Assassin's Creed or a Need for Speed, etc. may not necessarily be happy with the Wii U.
The unique selling point happens to be the great controller and the lovingly designed game worlds. Comparing against a PC, a PS4 or Xbox One, the Wii U in other games actually only lose because here she wanted to never take seriously!
I hope in any case still many sequels to older game titles, as it may have Mario Bros., Mario Kart and Legend of Zelda shown us also like to a new F-Zero "U" Metroid "U" or Secred of Mana "U "follow - I am excited!
