A masterpiece of the genre 1

Though the beginning is a little long, the pen is there, sharp and full control. I personally especially liked all the chapters that followed "The Dog", moods and tables which follow are striking and induce to ponder the notion of enemy when you're in the heart of the conflict. A rare testimony if any, emphasis on the lives of soldiers, mainly when they are outside of the front line. The stupidity of civilians left in the back causes much hatred as shirkers, the ballyhoo, that punishment and pity inspired the soldiers beaten by incessant rains ("Our worst enemy is the water "sensational!).

Editing is increased by replacing some interesting file specific to conflict notions, and recorded the work of Barbusse in the sagas of World War alongside other major writings (such as "Woods Cross" From R .Dorgelès).

A must-read book, except for interest for the period, at least to appreciate the striking style of an author having written down his own memories of the war.

Blood, tears, laughter and smiles, between tenderness, warmth, companionship, grief and cold, it's a rare feather that we are dealing here!
