On October 12, 1761, Marc-Antoine Calas was found hanging in the shop of his father Jean Calas, which will be charged with the murder of her son despite lacking evidence. Voltaire, known for its many philosophical tales, defends Calas publishing a Treatise on Tolerance. Voltaire provides evidence of the innocence of Calas, for that it seeks to demonstrate that the murder of Mark Antony, by his father, is impossible. Jean Calas being an elderly and fragile person, moreover, it could not act alone does not have the strength to commit the murder. Moreover, even if that had been possible, it would have had to be helped either by his other son, either by his wife or by her maid, but all had no logical reason to be accomplices of the father. Voltaire has used several rhetorical questions to put the recipient at the accomplished fact, to force him to reflect and highlight the absurdity of the decision of justice. He manages to take the defense of Calas in speculating adhere to the theory of justice, to better refute: that all the skill of the author. Voltaire does not stop there and after taking the defense of Calas and proved his innocence, he also shows injustice, lack of skills, lax justice and its corruption, by clear and vocal about. But this text is also a critique of religious intolerance of Catholics and these are all crimes in the name of religion than Voltaire puts the criticism bench. Voltaire "investigator" Voltaire "accuser" a brave fight and an exciting reading.
