I could connect with parts from this set a well-developed from a foreign device hard drive using the included USB cable to my computer (bring previously on the disk the jumper in the 'master' position!) And access it. Problems with the power supply (as reported here in part) I had not even after 45 minutes of operation. The included software (Fnet Backup to go) I have not tried or used; the operation under Windows 8.1 succeeded by simple plugging without CD or additional drivers.
