So I bought the expensive Nikon DX 55-200 VR. I had to try it immediately, of course. I looked at the first pictures on the computer and was disappointed. Okay, the conditions were difficult. Open shutter, low light. Well, I thought, at least the image stabilization works fine. But there's nothing like a direct comparison, right?
So I took out my favorite lens, the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR, which once replaced my Nikon AF S DX 18-70 / 3,5-4,5G IF-ED and that I love since then. A wonderful lens with a focal length range and a perfect, the Nikon DX 18-70 vastly superior picture performance.
Aperture 16, focal length 85mm. To my surprise, won my new Nikon DX 55-200 VR superior in terms of sharpness. No Doubt. Great contrast, virtually no vignetting and natural colors. The clear winner in every image of this test series. Okay, 85mm maximum focal length of my Nikon DX 16-85 VR. I perhaps should not expect miracles. Next Test.
Aperture 16, focal length 55mm. Same result. While not quite as clear as before, but again, wins the Nikon DX 55-200 VR. Unbelievable how hot it is! Even with the smallest focal length!
Perhaps my favorite lens is not yes aperture 16. The same two tests at aperture 8. The winner is: Nikon DX 55-200 VR.
Not that now one thinks my Nikon DX 16-85 VR would be bad. Or even blurred. By no means. I love it so much, among other reasons, because it is still magnificent images at full aperture! Family celebrations with the flash, there is no better lens for this purpose. Only dimmed at 55 and 85mm, the Nikon DX 55-200 VR is simply better!
The biggest problem of this objective would seem to be that it is too low. I had the first pictures actually considered so biased that I had with it for. On the other hand, I had made the first pictures with an open aperture. And indeed seen as a pronounced vignetting over the entire zoom range. The absolutely brilliant image editor Nikon Capture NX2 already corrected automatically chromatic aberrations. If you switch this automatic starting to show up at maximum aperture also significant fringing.
At aperture 8 or 16 but you will not find it. I could not believe it, but switched to the correction from, you should see no color fringing.
The autofocus is fast and especially unerringly and the image stabilizer is worth gold. If you hold the lens in your hands, do not want to believe what it can be. It is very light and feels, in comparison to the Nikon DX 16-85 VR, cheap to. But it provides an outstanding performance at an unbeatable price / performance ratio!
