I have long tormented by the decision which UWW I should buy myself for my D800. My focus was essentially on the focal length range between 20 and 24mm. Shorter focal lengths are very extreme for me and require a lot of attention to a "beautiful" art work. To select the 16-35mm Nikon 14-23mm and were also from Nikon. The latter is everywhere acted as dream lens and the desire to own this lens was great. Ultimately, I have but chose the 16-35iger because it is has a filter thread is smaller and lighter and less prone to flares. I have therefore a higher priority given to the practical use as the absolutely achievable image quality. The new AF-S 20mm f1.8 was not yet available at that time. At the first possible opportunity, I went to my site for test shots and did test shots with different focal lengths and aperture settings and at home viewed with Lightroom in the 100% view. I was excited at first. The image quality was already at full aperture significantly above what I expected after all that reading on the Internet. On further stopping down the edge sharpness is getting better and it really only stay a few mm in the corners which are not resolved to individual pixels. Although one should be aware that these are only a few meters from the lens and the recordings were made in the setting "infinite". All recordings were also in the corners much better resolved than I could reach it with my Sony D850 and 20mm and 24mm prime lenses from Minolta. A further series of images (no sample images) with 28mm showed even in the absolute corners a resolution at the pixel level of image sharpness.
I wonder now if I had to get a particularly good specimen or if my demands are too low fortunate. The latter I do not think, since neither the AF-S 28mm f1.8 nor could the AF-S 35mm f1.8 convince similarly in terms of imaging performance like the 16-35mm f4.0 from the same manufacturer.
I am absolutely satisfied with the optical performance of this lens and it can only recommend.
