To my knowledge, was Natalie Cole the first tried it, on their right to award-winning album "Unforgettable" (1992):
When Natalie Cole, the thing was feasible. She sings on "Unforgettable" songs with her dead father Nat King Cole.
Here things look different.
Barry Manilow is not able to give the songs a new note.
Worse, he messed up the songs.
Only 2 examples:
- "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" (with Mama Cass, "The Mamas & The Papas"): The already long dead "Mama" Cass "sings him out of the studio.
- "I believe in you and me" (with Whitney Houston): Here the inequality of (vocal) weapons is even more evident.
And so it goes on.
Whether "Sunshine On My Shoulders" (with John Denver) or "The Look of Love" (with Dusty Springfield): Barry's voice is flat, anemic.
The album is the technical bells and whistles and artistic absolutely worthless.
When Barry was eager to sing the songs, then he should make another cover album.
That would definitely be the better choice gesesen than those awful duets from the retort.
I would have never thought of as a long-BM-fan who knows all her albums and has that I would give him for an album once only 1 star, but here there is no alternative.
"My Dream Duets" he calls the Album-- He had this dream will not be realized.
Now make any great and deserved Künstler-- and that is Barry Manilow zweifellos-- sometimes concede a loss, even a serious.
That he can still he proved with his last two albums "15 Minutes" (2011) and "Night Songs" (2014).
Both are great.
But "My Dream Duets" is as superfluous as a goiter.
Let's hope it was a one-time mistake.
