A Life Less Lived: The Gothic Box (Box 3 CD + 1 DVD) (CD)

Customer Review

Gothic? Most of the comments of the authors gathered in a beautiful booklet attached to the compilation show that they are not found under that name. Admittedly, although the look can be quite enjoyable, it can also turn into a big horn. Gothic appears quite derogatory and such meaning can not be associated with the music gathered on this compilation. Many, after the storm cleared the punk rock world, rebuilt by projecting into the future with the help of new technological means and new sounds. These waves were creative new wave and cold wave. Of the two, the cold wave was more demanding, more arty and certainly darker. The black them was fine. But is it as far as the Gothic term should be involved? The only common point seems to be the beauty and elegance of architectural constructions with the same qualifier.
Four discs in this package, including a DVD and three CDs. It does not seem to be any particular logic to the composition of the three discs. No chronological order, half of the 53 titles came from 1980-1984 (the most beautiful and most representative). Only a few incursions (5 titles) pre-80 and post-95's (nothing after 1998) are present. No gender separation, the very rock and post-punk tracks alongside the most innovative titles and artistically interesting. The share is beautiful for the artists who have left their mark this cold wave. It begins with the most beautiful quartet: Joy Division, Cure, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy and continues with (among others) groups from their members (for Bauhaus and Sisters). Interestingly titles and more experimental and not always associated with the movement cold wave groups are present (we find pleasure here Dalis Car, Cranes, the "all my colors" Echo, but also Ministry). Security selection could have been different (it should anyway be content with them for many groups gathered here), but we find them with pleasure. Some choices are brave because more cold wave motion representative (an excerpt from "Garlands" to Cocteau Twins), others are more obvious, being the best of the group (Romeo's distress, Away). It certainly lacks some groups of 4AD and Crammed Disc but all is the best compilation cold wave in the market.
The DVD is an interesting bonus, combining clips and concert footage (extract Bela Lugosi's dead may regret not having lived it live). Cleverly, many titles are different from those of CD.
