The Casual Vacancy (Hardcover)

Customer Review

No look inside the book, no advance copies of the book critics and to secrecy as to Harry Potter's best times: Before the release of "The Casual Vacancy" is hardly anything about the plot of the first book of Joanne Rowling after the global Harry Potter success became widely known.

This procedure makes one curious:
Is it just a matter of driving the sales by the largest possible media hype in the light of heights? If the book is perhaps so boring or failed, that the readers should it advance and buy even before the appearance of the first critiques and reviews? Or fear of publishing that readers jump rows as soon as they learn that the evil f *** - word felt several hundred times used and worst human abysses open up - from drug use on domestic violence to rape?

Anyway, I bought the novel in the English original and in German translation and read it (except for short breaks) in one go. Since little is known about the individual characters in the novel is known so far, I first briefly describe some of the protagonists, before I close with the actual review.

Let the section marked with *** Please select from if you do not want to get to know the characters before reading the book!
PS: Since Amazon use obscene expressions prohibits, I replaced in some places vowels by asterisks *. I hope that the text is still legible and understandable.

It's not a magical world in which JK Rowling takes us with her first book after the worldwide success of their magical Harry Potter series, on the contrary:

+) Social worker Kay uprooted their teenage daughter Gaia, to maintain an affair with no future;
+) Gavin does have an affair with Kay, but sought his friend's wife;
+) A petty criminal middle-class family man used his wife and his sons as punching bags and is even taken it from his wife in protection;
+) Andrew, the son of beating father exposes his old man out of revenge and falls in love with Gaia;
+) Andrews Best Friend Fats, adopted son of the school principal, Birds By Eyck * lt Working Class girl Krystal and maltreated Asian Surkhvinder;
+) Doctor Parminder Jawanda, like her daughter Sukhvinder exposed agonizing xenophobia;
+) The drug-addicted (ex-) prostitutes Terri insulted her teenage daughter Krystal happy as H * re and calls on it to explode;
+) Krystal, the daughter of Drogenh * re is no less obscene than her mother and tries to prevent the youth welfare office pokes her 3-year-old brother to the orphanage again;
+) And then there are a number of other, often unlikable characters with whom people did not want to identify only forge intrigues, their neighbors wish only the worst, spread gossip, gossip and false accusations ...

Review:
With her new novel Jo Rowling has delivered a sobering, socially critical milieu study:
It describes a divided town, in which after the death of "do-gooders" Barry Fairbrother the blades are sharpened: The wealthy are trying to distinguish themselves from the poor, the poor in turn talk to petty crime on water; Children and parents are fiercely hostile to each other and have left for each other nothing but hatred and contempt; Teacher /, social workers / inside and physicians / doctors struggling to long losing battle.

Rowling describes characters as they occur in every country in every city she describes dysfunctional family relationships that are characterized by mutual incomprehension and brute force, tells the story of a teacher who not free himself and entrusted to students / interior neither bullying protect yet can restrain; describes a useless mother, who does not want to believe what her childhood friend is doing to their children.

But they rather just use held words and sentences and juicy dialogues that convince with their realism and authenticity. Rowling has created no literary masterpiece (I get the book 4 or 5 star), but writes so, as promised, the choice of words is often vulgar and vulgar, bashfully the reader / the reader should not be so.

If you, dear reader / dear reader, it can be difficult to endure to read a story that tells of parents and children, who despise each other, women, neither protect themselves and their children from violence, from "honest" citizens , forging the nasty intrigues have of young people from the cemetery completely callous sexual intercourse and all this processed in dialogues which are full of wild verbal expressions, you can save yourself reading this book and the anger at the boondoggle.

Should it for buying (or for borrowing) decide that novel you, you expected I think a well-told story with a variety of protagonists and storylines, which Rowling skillfully linked. Particular attention has placed in my opinion on their young protagonists who are the most interesting characters in the novel for me personally.

The story begins with the death of the "good soul" of the Community and ends tragically with two other deaths. At the funeral, they finally come together, friend and foe alike, rich and poor, the inhabitants of the "underclass settlement" and the beautiful Victorian homes, behind their facades send the same horror as happens in the plate.

PS: If you read the original English edition, should be prepared that the (lower layer) figures speak not just fine Oxford English! The slang is used to and might reader / inside with less good English from the concept bring.
