The Tibetan Book of the Dead: The Great Liberation through listening in the intermediate states (Paperback)

Customer Review

The translator and commentator provides a very rich and full version of the bard thödrol, the first after him, directly translated into French Tibetan. It's really a pleasure to find so many texts that complement and inform us more fully than in previous versions of other authors.
However, it is regrettable that the comments above texts rather than be integrated throughout the course of their reading, making them more complicated understanding because of back-and-forth mandatory. Moreover, the author has a tendency to disperse in his explanations (lack of synthesis, too much unnecessary parentheses with anecdotal remarks whose interest is debatable, for example on translation points or even on infighting among the monastic orders on a given text, which should have been referred to simply as page footnotes so as not to undermine overall understanding) suffering therefore a lack of however essential clarity in this kind of work very complex, if one wishes to avoid getting lost in the maze of the original texts by Tibetan enrolled in an often redundant and repetitive style.
If we want to understand clearly the sequence and meaning of the structure of the book's text, it will prove therefore essential to make oneself the organizational hierarchy (or tables) that have not been made, taking up with titles and short summaries what each text and paragraph (eg when describing the appearance of deities from different chakras) if there is to be in clear view of the general dynamic unfolding. This will identify through the complexity and abundance of detail prayers through charts or tables to avoid losing the general meaning of the texts.
It is a tribute to Philippe Cornu for the tremendous work that the gathering, translation and commentary of the texts had to give him, and also to have had the merit to bring us finally a more complete version first, and apparently rich precisely interpreted the so called until the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Furthermore, this book he translated and commented enables finally understand the progressive sequence of visions that gradually occur at the beginning of the bardo, because before him must be clear that no other version had been able to explain clearly these processes first of all start from the chackra the heart and develop into an explosion of diverse visions. When reading the other books that crucial point was not mentioned to my knowledge, and it was impossible to know that the first deities came from this chackra. We just thought they were from the Spirit directly without any intermediary.
Finally, the author had the good idea to add (as he did in his book of Tibetan astrology) in the form of color plates, the mandalas of deities it is essential to be able to view during reading tips memorial and meditation on the various processes and a glossary of key Sanskrit and Tibetan terms.
