One plays the Empire and the other rebels. While the rebels in Basisset already have access to Luke Skywalker as a pilot, the empire must abide by lesser-known pilots. Darth Vader is playable only in an expansion set. But that makes sense because Darth Vader does not fly in a dinky tie-fighter but in a Tie-Advanced.
The rules are learned relatively quickly. There is a Quick Start Regulations and the expert rules. The Quick Start rules you need really just to get started, the second or third game you can play then already an expert. Experienced table toppers can of course enter without problems as experts. Even the experts regelen are very clear and allow a relatively fast-paced game with enough tactical depth.
I would however, recommend the basic game twice to buy, that's it cheaper than having three individual miniatures buys (Two TIE fighters and X-Wing) and an additional package with dice. The supplied dice are not enough namely, if you will upgrade your bird properly. In addition, it's more fun when a few more ships fly.
The combat system is very intuitive and well kept very simple. You can attack, evade, use target detections and wander for maneuver. Neither side has an advantage, neither the Empire nor the rebels have a significant advantage. So it all depends on the tactical skill and luck of the dice the player. The latter can however be affected by cards.
For those who play little but SW fans who finished painted ships are definitely also in eye-catcher in a display case.
