Savage Dragon Volume 10: Endgame (Paperback)

Customer Review

This volume follows Worlds at War (episodes 41-46). It includes episodes 4-52, originally published in 1988, written, drawn and inked by Erik Larsen. The color development is performed by the IHOC studio (with Reuben Rude), with a lettering Chris Eliopoulos. Better to have started reading the series with the first volume Baptism of fire to capture all the ins and outs of intrigues, let alone recognize the multitude of characters.

On a beautiful uppercut sends Savage Dragon Star waltz into the background. It was actually Kill-Cat (Alan Williamson) who was trying to pass for Star to integrate governmental organization SOS (Special Operations Strikeforce) led by Savage Dragon. Derick Stephenson tells Dragon SOS due to visit Liberheim (a small state in central Europe) to end the actions of Dread Knight, a dictator in armor. Later, Savage Dragon returned to Chicago to help contain the criminal organization Vicious Circle, in the Horde cut. It welcomes back Alex Wilde. Meanwhile, Rock (Joe Manning, head of SOS) prevents the invasion of New York by Atlanteans.

In fact, Erik Larsen realized two covers for this book, amazon and declared the least provocative. On the real cover, Savage Dragon is typing like a deaf on an opponent who is not in the drawing. Dragon had torn his left arm and his opponent with batons. Not a single page of Lost: from cover bad taste and dark humor strikes. The next page is just as ironic with Star flying through the air as a result of the uppercut Dragon in a full-page drawing. The last episode also includes a pulling arm (but on another person) of the most violent.

As usual, Erik Larsen inserts nods to classic comics. It begins with the mission of SOS Liberheim: a dictator in armor in a country of Central Europe ... let's see ... it starts with Doctor Doom and it ends up. Except here, Dread Knight does not take the shock 6 pages and the case is settled (original manner) for good. Larsen continues with an Atlantean invasion (even if their leader is not like Namor, difficult to reconcile with). 3 pages, this invasion has lived and defeat is final. Members of Eternal Youths recall the Forever People created by Jack Kirby, see Fourth World. Most attention will identify the names and Super Tough Tough Young (respectively Burt Ward and Adam West) are tributes to actors embody Batman and Robin in the TV series, respectively Adam West and Burt Ward. As usual, Larsen pays tribute to the great names of comics, without ever falling into plagiarism, by printing its own brand, whether on the environment or the personalities of these characters. it just has to see Zeus and Hercules to realize that Larsen interprets in its own way, very different from Marvel (Thor and Avengers series) or DC (series Wonder Woman).

In terms of adolescent provocation, Larsen reached the top with Super Tough Tough and Young. When they meet, they roll a well digger slobbery, while Young was Tough adolescents aid (sidekick) Super Tough. Provocation is not in a homosexual relationship, but the age difference and the reference to the hypothetical love dimension in the relationship between Batman and Robin. This scene is made even more provocative by homophobic Howard Niseman soliloquy in the background, debiting all the most possible offensive and degrading names designating homosexuals. As usual, the mode of expression of Erik Larsen is direct, bluntly and incredibly effective.

Larsen plays provocatively with the moral fiber of the reader. This kiss between men is nothing glamorous but homophobic reaction Niseman clear imbecility grime of his behavior, and therefore concentrated affection of the reader towards the couple, except that it is a relationship between an adult and his former protege. They could be father and son, but Larsen leaves no doubt that he loves love. Larsen frontal attack prejudice, without finesse, but without hypocrisy. To the extent any other superhero story earn reader empathy, the latter would think that Larsen would be more on the side of Tough or at least tolerate their relationship, without wishing to trivialize or described as normal.

Savage Dragon's adventures are not based solely on colorful superheroes and heaviest fighting. Over the episodes, the characters have acquired a thickness that makes them close. The reader really feel the dismay of Barbaric who was able to realize his dream of having his effigy figures, and yet did not get what he wanted. These figures do not sell because his image has been used in a cartoon rotten. At the same time it is easy to share his pleasure to be a young dad. When heroin is losing its two legs in the clash Lieberheim the reader undergoes the shock of the image, but also sympathizes and wonders how she will overcome this trauma. It is a great pleasure to see Amy Blecher (She-Dragon) regain balance, and grow. He wonders about the real motivations of William Jonson: Rita Medermade lovers, fleeing her brother Ralph Jonson, hiding something. It shares the exhilaration of Savage Dragon and Alex Wilde who are fun without complex. He noted that feedback does not hesitate to describe strong women who take the initiative on men, the sentimental, but also in action.

In addition to these qualities, Larsen his narrative mastery, which combines the superhero conventions (physical conflict Homeric and inventive), colorful and easily recognizable characters with a good level of detail (the teething Mako, with three rows of teeth), which advances plot significantly (real victory over Horde), innovative superpowers (and sometimes horrific, veins Vein forming prehensile ropes), all served in a humorous setting. The amalgam between Brainiape and Cyberface was already funny (a monkey with a brain in a jar grafted on top of his head), he takes another step parody and absurdity, with the addition of tack Overlord (a moment of visual comedy farce). Erik Larsen has even invented a new way to destroy Savage Dragon is declared dead at two thirds of the volume. That is why the given volume is entitled Resurrection (episodes 53-58).
