The packaging is a bit "extraordinaire", one can hardly unpack your hard drive without destroying the packaging (carton).
Annoying like to keep them for real aesthetes who their packaging (at least during the warranty period).
After unpacking, I was a little surprised, the product pictures to beautify the real dimensions but significantly.
In reality, the case is clearly "thicker" (above), less than 2 cm!
But what is done with Models in advertising .... why not with a (not quite as slim) hard drive ...
Well.
Otherwise the blue Aluminiumgekäuse looks very classy, but forgives no fingerprint.
Supplied with a short (less than 40 cm long) USB 3.0 cable is included, certainly a tribute to the primary portable use.
On the whole facility (z. B. Dropbox cloud servive) and included (installed) software I will not go into my review.
I want to go primarily to the speed / transfer rates.
Here one can say in advance; the My Passport Ultra is very fast but, USB 3.0 standard, the average range.
Although one should be aware that the "Passport" rotates at 5400 rpm.
A clear advantage; the hard disk runs almost silently.
Here is a brief overview of the transfer rates of some USB devices that I have at home:
SanDisk USB 2.0 Stick: 26MB / s
Kingston USB 3.0 Stick: 75MB / s
Transcend USB 3.0 Stick: 83 MB / s
WD "My Book" USB 3.0 external hard drive: 143 MB / s
The WD My Passport Ultra achieved in my test an average transfer rate of 113 MB / s.
To test the write speed, I have a 1.63 GB folder copied (source SSD Samsung 840 Pro).
When WD "My Book" and the "Passport", the write operation lasted equally long and rather exactly 24 seconds, which suggests an average write speed of 68 MB / s.
When Transcend USB 3.0 Stick the same write operation took 2 minutes and 24 seconds (approximately 11 MB / s)!
So quite passable values for the "Passport".
Conclusion:
High capacity, elegant and robust design with a quite ordinary speed.
There is also the good feeling about the proven WD quality (3 years warranty).
I find the "WD My Passport Ultra Metal Edition" 2TB external hard drive quite recommendable.
