Deciding under uncertainty (Paperback)

Customer Review

General Desportes is a French officer in the Army. He commanded the center of employment doctrine of forces, and the War College (called Joint Defense College at the time).

This book is a very good summary on the springs of action in wartime.

In the first part, the author recalls the permanence of uncertainty in military action, due as much to human factors and the environment. The Clausewitzian model (Chapter 4) is omnipresent: "fog" of war, friction phenomenon, chance and disorder are irreducible.
One of the chief qualities is to be able to act and take advantage of this fact.

The second part is thus devoted to the principles guiding the action of the military leader: reduce uncertainty (Chapter 7), managing uncertainty (Chapter 8) and using the uncertainty (Chapter 9). It is a reflection supported many historical examples.

This book is very well documented and illustrated many quotations, both classics (Sun Tzu, Jomini, Clausewitz) and contemporary (Foch, the Gulf War). Easy to read, numerous historical references serve as many starting points to deepen the themes.
Finally, even if it deals exclusively with military matters, the general character of the principles make it relevant and useful reading for anyone exercising senior.
