As is the third novel by Kate Morton after I read "The Mists of Riverton" and "The Garden of Secrets", I have found the narrative processes already used by Kate Morton: diary entries, in history history, going back and forth between eras ... and also the attraction of the author to unearth family secrets, even if they were buried under many layers of unspoken, avoidances, lids put on a bubbling cauldron too. But now, at one time or another, the bubbles escape and when they burst, they can hurt.
With consummate art of the detour and slower, Kate Morton is languishing (too much?) The player for 546 pages before releasing the info that illuminates everything. I kinda regret that in the end there is much talk of the discovery of the truth and that the last days of Dorothy in her home, surrounded by her children are less developed; it would have completed the Children of the siblings. Another "thread" unfinished: the sterility of Vivien ..... (I say can not say more to not reveal anything). That said, it was a fun (almost) because it is not well documented. The main characters are well seen and it was fun to follow them in their lives, still a little on the edge side.
I recommend this reading, which provides for sure interest, disorientation and escape.
