With a Little Help from My Friends (Audio CD)

Customer Review

The inspiration, With A Little Help from my Friends rearrange an epic in 3/4 should be Joe Cocker came to the smallest room in the courtyard of his home; The Beatles were so impressed by his version that they sent him a congratulatory telegram. Tommy Eyre organ intro was inspired by Procol Harum A Whiter Shade of Pale. To date, Cocker plays hardly a concert without this song. ('87 Appeared on a remix single and maxi-single.)

Although he got his big break in 1968 with this single; But it was another Lennon / McCartney song was, with whom he in 1964 recording career began, a fairly faithful copy of I'll cry instead, which is indeed to be found on several other samplers, but unfortunately, as its B-side, Those Precious Words, has been omitted in this '99 Remaster (Those Precious Words, there's only on "The Long Voyage Home").

For the B-sides appear here his two '68 episode Singles, Marjorine and With a Little Help ...: New Age of the Lily and Something's coming on, both celebrate their CD Permiere here! Both B-sides and Marjorine are Cocker / Stainton compositions, as well as the album Songs Change in Louise and Sandpaper Cadillac, what makes this remaster the album with the second highest proportion of Cocker compositions (only on "Something to say" three years later This was even higher) with six songs. Interesting how much Joe Cocker at that time composed himself; From 1972 he wrote only once every few albums out a song with, eg Another Mind Gone ('89), Angeline ('94) or High Lonesome Blue ('96).

For a debut album play amazingly well-known (partially future) rock stars with, alongside Chris Stainton (the time except keys played even Bass) ua Albert Lee and Jimmy Page (g) (the latter with Led Zeppelin in the wings), Stevie Winwood (org) , Clem Cattini (dr) and Henry McCulloch (g).

The most common Joe Cocker has probably been covered in his career Lennon / McCartney songs; the second most likely to Bob Dylan. Here open with Just Like a Woman and I Shall Be Released two Dylan covers this round; they already show Cockers penchant for musical clumsiness.

I have three favorite songs, two of them co-written by Cocker: Change in Louise and Sandpaper Cadillac are fresh and ambitious, the same pensive rock songs; pity that Cocker has not followed up the letter during his career. Do not Let Me Be Misunderstood for me was always one of the archetypal rock songs: a profound text, interpreted by Cocker as an original composition, great arranged (the Animals version was always too fast), drums, bass, piano, organ, guitar , great singing, in the Cocker purely puts his whole pain (which - except for the vocals - has outlined the standard instrumentation of this album), all play dynamically and song serve everyone knows his craft, but none imposes itself in the foreground ... so has a good rock band to play!

The whole album was recorded in England, except for traffic Feeling Alright (4:09), which took up Joe in Los Angeles; on previous LP and CD editions appeared an alternative, slightly longer Mix (4:18). Also replaced the '99 remaster a nice stereo mix of Marjorine (2:37) the mono mix of earlier editions. (An alternate stereo mix (2:46) can be found on some 70's and 80 samplers.)

Unlike other debut albums shows "With a Little Help from My Friends" an artist who had already found his style. The title track remains with Joe Cocker to date program: He goes his own way, but without the support of managers, musicians and friends can not. For the hoped-deluxe edition of this album, I hope ahead following, above-mentioned bonus tracks: I'll cry instead / Those Precious Words; With A Little Help from my Friends ('87 Remix); Marjorine (Mono Single), the alternative mix of feeling alright and the alternate studio take of With a little help ... ('92 appeared on "With a Little Help from my Friends - Live").
