Reading "a Russian novel", the comparison with "a French novel" Beigbeder jumped out at me and Carrère having published before, Beigbeder down in my esteem. Beyond the similar title, is the story of a writer at a stage in his life where he is in bad shape and needs to move on. No doubt this happens to many writers and others before Carrère also used this theme.
Only to move on, Carrère exorcise the drama surrounding his maternal grandfather left like a ghost in the post Second World War.
No fussing over this war, thankfully!
In both novels, the author describes as the service cad but always with this man next to women with a vintage style that self-flagellum but does not spare either entourage (except children the writer and that's good!).
The family home, to the island of Ré Carrère, the Basque country Beigbeder, is an important point of attachment. The new starting Carrère finally be on another island, the Island of Beauty.
As for the title, I do not think it reflects the content of the story: the conflictual relationship seems to be what stands out most, much more than the story Kotelnitch, which also speaks of love or of the missing grandfather (family love).
The episode of the big hassle lovers returning from a trip is simply "magnificent". The sudden outburst of the author, who wonders if her reaction is crazy as she is just human, is a great exposure. And as he explains in the novel, writing made is that close to writing hot giving the reader the flavor of the argument as if he was alive! It saves us a work on psychology episode.
There is also no pretense in the narration of trips Kotelnitch. Who does not know ever said after starting a project "but hell, where did I poked, it already fills me, the experience will screw up"?
In the end, the major downside of this novel ... it is the end! We were served a short and sketchy happy ending and a letter of justification on the publication of the novel. Difficult withdrawal!
