Director Nicolas Winding Refn ("Valhalla Rising") is likely to have quite leave of Walter Hill's classic 1978'er "DRIVER" with Ryan O'Neal, Bruce Dern and Isabelle Adjani inspired, because as "Driver" refers "DRIVE" its appeal from the portrayal of the characters, their interactions, the dialogue not heavy and yet meaningful storyline, and the hand-picked, functional and perfect action sequences in which Gosling presents his skills as a getaway driver to the test.
A film with a wonderful pull that one captures due to its narrative style and appearance right from the first minute on - and what is to a large extent also on the soundtrack written by Cliff Martinez ("The Limey").
And what an absolute gem of film score!
Worn and spherical, subliminally impulsive and restless - Cliff's Imagine masterful score to Steven Soderbergh's version of "SOLARIS" mixed with elements from his also successful score to - before simply as urban, provided with subliminal rhythm variant "TRAFFIC The power of the cartel" !
Held entirely electronically in the style of the 80s, he remembers the sound of her in places quite splendid to the best score work of Tangerine Dream for director Michael Mann, "Thief - The loner" with James Caan 1981: Fabulous elaborated, melodic sound arches!
Plus a pinch of Mark Isham and his score to the legendary "The Hitcher" with Rutger Hauer in 1986 - as Isham his time "tuned" Martinez his electronic equipment up in almost shimmering heights!
If you can imagine all this together in his mind's ear - then comes the one presented here cut diamond as close as humanly possible!
The five songs at the beginning of the disk size seems ideal to Martinez 'work - all in the style of electronic music of the 80 held (up to the fourth track, which dates from 1971, but nonetheless fitting beautifully into the overall picture, and in is placed film absolutely perfect).
Out tip would be here Track 1, the grandiose opener Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx, "Night Call".
More I do not say here.
Except: An absolute recommendation !!!!
