Fast NAS with caveats

WD My Book Live NAS System with hard disk 2TB (8.9 cm (3.5 inches), cloud storage) (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

Have now decided for eternal back and forth for a NAS same make.

The decor was simple, connected to the network, found under Win7 immediately. The User Interface is basically clear, but unfortunately with not too many configuration options.
Now even the panel assigned a static IP and you went off with users create and approvals Create (folder). This worked without problems, but in my opinion the UI responds a little sluggish.
Here, there are the following points should be noted:

1.) There is always a "Public" folder factory fitted, which is also non-erasable and which no user permissions can be assigned. This folder has any (anyone) located in the LAN unrestricted access. But does not really pose a problem, one must not put in this folder.
2.) For each folder created yourself access per user can be comfortable and quick to set up.
3.) If you want to use the MBL for streaming via the integrated Twonky server was, mentioned that can be set separately for each folder which content (music, videos, photos) of this folder should be recognized as streaming content.

After setting up I started copying files. Since my somewhat older router (WRT54G) is not the schellste, could not really convince the file transfer. However, since both support Notebokk and the MBL Gbit Ethernet, I swapped my existing Switch to a Gbit switch. (Costs about 20 euros). But that was an investment for the benefit of my nerves. Since I now zugreife directly from the PC to the MBL (without going through the router) I get but considerably copy speeds of about 28 MB per second when writing from the PC to DS MBL and considerable 38MByte per second which corresponds already about 310 Mbit.
So with this performance I am very satisfied.

Should be also mentioned the opportunities from the outside (Internet) access the files of the MBL:

1) via Smartphone App: very nice feature, with no real purpose ....
2.) via MioNet: I have not tried, I do not run all my personal data on a third server to it.
3.) FTP: in my opinion the most comfortable and best method. Here, however, some knowledge of the router configuration is required.
4) via VPN: not too shabby is always the opportunity to "dial in" via VPN to the home LAN. Matching (router) hardware, of course.

Now I want to address the shortcomings:

1) No more connections: There is no way around an external hard drive or a printer via USB to connect. Other NAS systems can do this. However, this does not really count as a negative point, since this is known before buying, and in my case, not even necessary.
2.) No "power button": The device has no switch. The only possibility is runterzufahren the device via software. After that, however, you have to unplug the power cord and re-infect. This presents a problem when the NAS is not in reach of the PC.
3.) Now nan the greatest shortcoming, which for me is completely incomprehensible:
After updating to the (recommended) latest firmware I can not access the user interface. Although the file transfer still works properly, but no further changes are possible (user rights, approvals .....).
Apparently there is a problem with the firmware by Western Digital. And the best thing is that there is no way to perform a rollback to a previous firmware version. While it is a reset button on the back, but this only resets the settings. The support of WD also leaves something to be desired, obtained eternal answer. From various forums I then read out that you have to send in the NAS and a (!!) used gets back.
So I'll return the NAS to Amazon, because I would like a new back (yes only 1 week old). Now I'm strong at considering whether I should take me the same NAS again, or change to another. the product produced, I was very satisfied, but the little up-front attitude at WD in terms of their own mistakes is very questionable. ..

So much for my experiences with this product, maybe I could help someone with this.
