I can only associate myself with the comments already posted here, with a little flat. Schumann has never excelled in the symphonic genre, as evidenced receptions often cost his orchestral works ... and many rewrites. The piano much better suited to expressing his feelings. However, he left in symphonies 3 and 4 some wonderful pages. The Symphony No. 4 with its abrupt tempo changes particularly well rendered by the orchestra This contrasts with the very classical of the "Rhenish". It nevertheless has a fourth unexpected movement and great solemn beauty. It is curious that the partition of this "feierlich" was written in E (b) key while the whole movement is minor, especially in difficult key scripts also. The introduction of the brass in this movement is a real surprise in this elegy grandiose and dark. The middle section is a little more dramatic (in 3/2 I think) and the resumption of the theme pianissimo horns and trumpets is a moment of pure emotion. The final call trombones Si Maggiore are a powerful cry quickly stifled by the darkening of the melody in E (b) minor. This movement would have benefited from being played a little more "andante", hit the center section would have gained power without losing its character.
