Georgina Kincaid is a succubus with a conscience: it can not stand to feed on the lives of its victims nice, thus depriving themselves of vital energy it desperately needs. The grip of the book is original: a Machiavellian sensible creature to feed on sex moods (while having already sold) and merely prey second choice, already weak and corrupt souls, little nourishing but soothing to his conscience. Both the write right away: this chick is very engaging, complex, friendly, worked by its impossible desire for children but also by original sin responsible for his status, and struggling with all his might against his nature, while being very alive, very contemporary and humorous. One can quibble about her a little too modern and emotional behavior to be having a much rolled his bosses, but that's forgivable, we are in the presence of a first novel, and it must meet the minimum needs of readers and readers. So if a succubus multi centenary is endowed by its creator with a heart of artichoke, one accepts it or you leave it. The universe evolves Georgie however lacks a bit of consistency, it is too vague, too focused on Seattle and the secondary characters are somewhat neglected, which has the effect of reducing the potential density of the book. However, sailing in a credible universe coexist peacefully, see friendly, the forces of good (Angels and cronies) and the forces of evil (archdemons, demons, vampires, succubi, incubi, etc ...) in Seattle contemporary. The author, a graduate in comparative religion prevents us doing theology courses or to dwell heavily on the issue, while calling him a subtle and light way, in a discreet rear plan rather second degree. Phew. And without seeming to touch it, the book takes head on the fate of notions of predestination, but never frontally. The plot of the novel interweaves two son: assaults and murders suffered by other non-human population ... and romance. The thread "policeman" is enjoyable to follow but a little easier to fan for my taste. That said, it is not bored. For the wire "romance" Georgina, bookseller by trade, is torn between two suitors, his favorite novel author, a talented shy treatable, and a mysterious scholar, very confident, handsome as a god, the prototype modern prince charming. All the salt of this classic frame is in the Georgina dilemma: if she gives in to one of her suitors, she steals his life force. She can not love without destroying the object of his desire, it is therefore condemned not to love and to suffer. The author demonstrates a lot of finesse and intelligence, I found it very well, without ever lapsing into pathos. The amateurs of hot scenes will not, however, deprived of sweets because Georgina does not bother too many scruples to respond also to the call of nature (with bad guys, if you have followed). It is a law of its kind in urban fantasy: the heroine should have a good time ... It would still have been a shame that a succubus is an exception to the rule. But again, these scenes can also flood they be, they are not free. There is nothing to say about the literary technique, style is quite correct, very pleasant reading, very accessible, very linear, with the notable exception of a few flashback to the origins of heroin, very well led. This is the first novel by Richelle Mead, and without being totally at one or Kim Harrison Patricia Briggs, one is not too far, the weaknesses of the story are easily redeemed by the originality and freshness of heroin, although the latter may seem paradoxical legitimately, given its field. (And no, I am not referring to his publisher activity). The end of the book is a great success, both fine, bright and totally controlled.
A light reading without being uneducated, very nice without being highly touted only. FYI, I purchased this book on the basis of the first two chapters, available on the page of the edition large format. I can only advise you to do the same, following the novel is the sample match.
