Live Dates (Audio CD)

Customer Review

*** General *** to Album (from my review of 2005); Who knows, jumps to **** **** Sound edition:

After four good to excellent studio albums came in 1973, mandatory for a lot of bands this time live double album on the market that offers the classics of guitar band around the two lead guitarist Ted Turner and Andy Powell. And the two were the hallmark of the often two-part "Dual-Lead Guitar Attack" that they perfectly controlled in her songs.

Recorded during concerts in the UK in June 1973 (Rolling Stones Mobile Track 16) provides the classic album that come from the following albums:

"The King Will Come" (7 min.), "Warrior", "Throw Down The Sword" (with a beautiful guitar solo (6 min.) And "Blowin 'Free" by Argus
"Ballad Of The Beacon" and "Rock'n Roll Widow" by Four
"The Pilgrim" and "Jailbait" of Pilgrimage
"Lady Whiskey" and "Phoenix" by Wishbone Ash
"Baby, What You Want Me To Do", an old Jimmi Reed Blues, was released on any Wishbone Ash album and does not really fit on the album; the other rock bands did back in the early 70's was better and Wishbone Ash, and wanted to be a blues band, too.

However, the absolute highlight of a Wishbone Ash concert at that time was the final number "Phoenix" (17 min.), Which showed the perfect interplay of two lead guitars with the rest of the band.
Wishbone Ash knew at that time, to unite on their albums songs in differentiated musical styles. Many of her songs are so good and perfect that one which even 30 years later still like to listen.

The album had unfortunately when it first appeared in 1973 a slight flaw: the - unlike many other live recordings this time - dull recording quality without concise treble and bass, what with live recordings of this period - in comparison, for example, the excellent recording quality of Deep Purple's "Made in Japan" - is actually incomprehensible. What was in the LP-edition 1973 still quite alright, was sound-wise with the CD releases really bad: dull, pappiger sound without sharpening and tonal spectrum and the Concert Crowd shouted in the background, as well as the right sparse and quiet Communication of the band with the visitors. The MCA-double CD in 1992 brought no improvement since.
Despite everything, you come to "Live Dates" not around when you're on good rock music, because the band had something to offer to the album already.

**** Sound **** edition

After reading that the 2014er CD LP Mini format should be better by the sound, I had now ordered. Worthwhile the acquisition? Clearly yes, as far as the music itself, because the sound has yet risen significantly on the previous CD playback when the sounds together. This dull veil that had the recordings in advance is mostly gone, the treble and bass are much more concise and thus audible than before. The drums come from the sound across better than before.

The audience sound has my feeling, if at all, only slightly risen, unlike my CD version of 1992. The sound is too far in the background and sounds in parts still to dull. Apparently that was not really improve the remastering process.
Perhaps a new edition of the album would bring better results in a remix of multitrack tapes; in recall Humble Pies Performance Rockin The Fillmore or Made In Japan Deep Purple, both of which were also released early 70s and both have clearly gained from the volume and sound spectrum in the published in 2013 and 2014 remixed versions.

So the sound of live dates as a whole is not yet perfect, technically possibly were it even more possible. At least but the music certainly has risen from the sound, which is gratifying for me.
The CDs are both black, laid out like a mini-LP and plug (with inner sleeves made of paper), both in a (rather narrow) Cardboard cover to unfold. This is a reprint of the French album cover of 1973, which, unlike many other live dates cover when opening not showing 14 live photos of the band, but only two: one of Ted Turner and another, something silly photo of the band in a hotel room.
The credits for the album were not published in the interior cover, but at the back. Other Notes or a booklet do not exist here.

Overall I would recommend the purchase, because the best music comes across in this version of the album, as in the other known CD formats. There is the sound as described, although still limited, but with whom you will have to live up to date. Maybe there is again a deluxe edition, which really brings the undoubtedly good live album to shine. Worth it would in any case.
The album was released in Japan as SHM-CD, apparently with an accompanying catalog, consisting of many more live shots of the band from the period of 1973. Definitely a beautiful presentation! Often the SHM can actually the sound downright trump eg Made in Japan and Made in Europe by Deep Purple. Whether that is the case with live dates, but I can not judge.
