Rarely enough, they are, those metal bands that increase even after many, many years in the business yet.
There are many reasons: stylistic stagnation and endless repetition ... the fire of youth goes ... quarrels and line-up changes destroy the original band chemistry .... or is the singer's voice is no longer what it used ... in a few cases also kills a lot of success to the hungry band. Yes, the Machine Heads is not raining it truly from heaven.
Another positive example, the Portuguese are now to lead by Moonspell.
More than 25 years (!!!) there is the band already and it has always been understood that creative style achievement translate creative death.
The previous double album "Alpha Noir / Omega White" parted on both sides in an impressive way the stylistic poles of the band Death / Black Metal and Gothic Rock.
On "Extinct" the two sides are now re-integrated into each other, but the pendulum is swinging more towards gothic metal. The harsher elements of the band, including monstrous riffs and growls, are certainly present, but are, as it should be, always subordinate to the catchy song. And how catchy that are ... really all ten songs are taking place at the highest level, so melodic, the band has never been. Who needs a taste is not necessarily wrong with the opener "Breathe", the theme song or the murderously good sellers »Funeral Bloom" and "The Future is dark."
The production is perfectly managed, powerful and transparent, the fantastic keyboards and synths (often referred to as strings) expand the songs to an extra level. From time to give these parts to a great song, oriental touch. Here you skillfully circumnavigating the ausgelutschten clichés of the genre and sounds impressive uncheesy.
Furthermore Fernando Ribeira supplies, from support of guest vocalists, perhaps the best and most variable vocal performance of his career. Has brought the "Knödelige" which desöfteren me on previous albums of the band ("Ööööpiüüüm") smile is gone for good here.
"Extinct" creates the feat on the one hand to sound like the hungry and contemporary works of a young band on the other hand play out the entire experience of the past 25 years, for me is therefore nothing less than the best that Moonspell have ever made and a first contender for the album of the Year: from the Goth Metal throne! (10/10)
