I Remember Miles (Audio CD)

Customer Review

The pianist and singer Shirley Horn had indeed been around since the 50's in the music business, but her real breakthrough came only in the 80s and 90s with a series of albums for Verve, all highly praised and the CD here even with a Grammy for "Best Jazz Vocal Album "category. Miles Davis was for Shirley Horn in their own words something like an uncle, and in contrast to his somewhat gruff image they got to know him on a more pleasant side. Although started in 1997, this tribute does not address most of the electric Miles the 70s and 80s, but the Miles the 50s and 60s, 3 tracks from his "Porgy & Bess" album, "My Funny Valentine" from the prestigious " Cookin` "album, again 3 songs from" Seven Steps to Heaven ", etc. You can see it already, it is only ballads, a specialty of Shirley Horn, as well as the early Miles Davis. Roy Hargrove plays on 3 tracks very "Miles-ig", Toots Thielemans brings some nice wistful tones on "Summertime" and "Baby, Will not You Please Come Home", the only faster piece, you can hear the tenor saxophonist Buck Hill. As a companion usually the Davis veterans Ron Carter (b) and Al Foster (drums) are used, three times also Shirley Horn's Working Group Charles Ables (b) and Steve Williams (dr). The ballad song Shirley Horn's matches pretty well to pieces, I personally find the photographs with the guests Hargrove (Thielemans / Hill at the most successful, but it's also a lot of nostalgia here, something that never really looked Miles Davis in the rearview mirror, probably would not have liked.

So be it - very successful homage.
