Histoire (s) in 4 volumes

Here is a box for people already sensitized to the prog atmosphere. Needless to discover this kind in this eclectic profusion of titles and, because they are -parfois- short, do not give all the time necessary to the appreciation of the genre. As against the amateur will find joy both gratifying and few known titles and others, less known, that deserve to be discovered. The pleasure of being recounting the history of the genre, to fill some gaps in our knowledge and the desire to deepen listening to some groups widely participated in the joy of the discovery of the box.
The stories are grouped chronologically in four volumes depicting different periods of the genre. The first disc covers the period from 1969 to 1972. It allows to discover the beginnings of the genre and its psychedelic roots, rhythm & blues, jazz and pop. The excitement of the moment is pretty well traced in the three quarters of this volume titles before arriving (after experimental UFO Curved Air) a few peaks of the genre (YES, Aphrodite Child). The second volume (1972-1975) recounts the most prosperous period of the genre (and probably the most characteristic). This is -without surprise- excellent volume. The third part covers a period from 1976 to 1988. The first titles are very good but as soon as one reaches the 80 magic disappeared. Titles are simplistic and a bit heavy. Finally, the fourth disc includes titles in the last 25 years. Included are pretty generally regarded as the successors of the groups prog genre. It's heavy, rude and pompous. Quite often close to the hard or heavy rock, this does not honor the progressive movement (apart from the mars volta IQ and who are doing quite well).
It is regrettable that this package does not include some titles of key groups (Genesis, King Crimson and Pink Floyd was a fair -j'aurais to see there "on the trail of the fairies" of Ange). But, conversely, their absence leaves more room for other pieces of interest (either way fans of the genre defining albums already have these). I regret the absence of more pieces of current bands in my opinion closer to the progressive spirit (Muse, Esper, The Decemberists, DJ Shadow, Electrelane, to mention in their diversity, some worthy successors of creativity yesteryear). The fact remains that this package, and its inside booklet can discover a set of beautiful (if not wonderful) stories.
