In this novel, there is no name of a city or country, or characters. Like Intermittences death. Even if it comes well after blindness, construction is relatively the same (that'll teach me to read in the mess!). The characters do not have names, either. These are "the doctor", "the doctor's wife", "blind First Prev", "the wife of the first blind man," "the old banner", "the girl with sunglasses" and "squinting boy."
When the first blind stop driving rush hour, he does not know that it will be at the origin (is it really the first) to fall blind and contaminate all the others. We do not know how or why. Lest the government locks them first "sick" in an old asylum. Everyone is blind in contact with the blind, except one: the doctor's wife, the only person to have living eyes throughout this epidemic. But she did not tell anyone except her husband. The saying goes: "in a world of the blind, the one-eyed is king". But in this case, it would surely be a slave ... especially because the asylum was quick to "see" the men become beasts.
Again, Saramago speaks of the human soul. With its sometimes questionable humor, it shows us what we will not see. In the back cover of the Portuguese edition, says: "If you can see, looks If you can look, though.." And humans are not going to want what we can become in such a short time ...
Remarkable Saramago '!
