Alexander Grigorievich Arutyunyan was born in 1920 in Yerevan, First Republic of Armenia (Armenia). Very young, he met composer Alexander Spendiarian (1871-1928), and studied at the Yerevan State Conservatory in the composition class Sargis Barkhudaryan (1887-1973) and V. Talyan then from 1944 to 1946, with Igumnov of Constantine (1873-1948). From 1946 to 1948 he went to Moscow where he studied composition with Genrikh Litinski (1901-1985). After his graduation in Moscow, he returned to Armenia to teach at the State Conservatory of Yerevan and in 1954 was appointed Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Armenia, a position he held until 1990 . He died in 2012. In particular, he wrote the secular cantata "Homeland", a piano concerto, a violin concerto and a concerto for trumpet.
