Customer Review

To the old edition of Hive, there were already a number reviews that were unfortunately now not transmitted Amazon in the new edition. In principle, there are other than the price, no significant differences between the old and new version, so I would like to complement the review here:

Hive is a fantastic 2-player game, its profundity and Kurzweil constant source of delight. But you have to abstract-strategic games - ie mental duels - like. Who tends towards shallow and luck dependent games like the good old "ludo Not", for the Hive might be too strenuous. For any other purchase has been well worth it. Why, I would like to explain briefly below:

Although the comparison is considered to be overused, Hive is for me a game like chess. The two players have more than one insect tokens that can run certain trains. The player's turn brings either a token onto the battlefield or draws a token. The players aim to put the opposing Bee "Matt" Too. However, when a hive token is not beaten, but you can only set characters or the opponent's bee trying to encircle. Succeed the latter, you have won. As in chess, each game is different, each train requires planning how to get at the enemy with his characters and ward off attacks on their queen bee. The game is unlikely challenging.

However Hive has also in the areas of quality, where chess is an unattractive for many. When Hive is available in the Basic edition only 5 pawns, whose features are very easy to learn and even for children. A game usually takes only about 20 minutes. Must be assessed against chess hold significantly fewer figures in view and yet complexity and opportunities are unlikely high. Genial is the fact that Hive unlike chess no board needed because the characters always on the eponymous "swarm" (Engl. Hive) move.

The most important in my opinion counterpoint of the game is also similar to chess: The one who begins has a slight but sometimes decisive advantage. This is all the more important, the higher the skill level of the players. The starting player plays in this case, often just a rush tactics (the fastest possible attack on the opponent's bee with the strongest stones), which must somehow disturb the opponents. Typically, therefore, changes in several batches from the first player. In order to bring an analogy here to tennis: Who starts must get through his "service game". An impact on the problem starting player also have the available extensions for the game that I want to introduce:

1. The Mosquito
The mosquito token was the eldest extension to Hive. This new token has the opportunity to use all the skills that have such counters, where it rests. The mosquito is in my view a useful extension that increases the complexity of the game, but only slightly changed the strategies.

2. The Ladybug
The ladybird was the second extension and the gave me my least favorite person. The ladybug is very powerful, because it always go two steps on the swarm and then somewhere you can let fall. This makes the defense of a "gap" in which an attacking player has to push harder. I like the not so good. Under experienced players, it falls to that of the game starts even easier to play off by a rush tactics his head start, because it can easily pass certain defenses to the ladybug.

3. The (roll) Assel
The Assel is the latest addition, but one that has it all. The Assel moves slowly on Swarm (1 box). But It also has the ability to strike a fitting stone to yourself. I've played a few dozen games with the Assel and so far I think this extension simply ingenious, because they largely cancel out the conventional Rush tactics. It increases the complexity of an attack, because you have to consider a lot more with the Assel. Even more complex it is with Assel and mosquito. The Assel is in my view a token that everyone enthusiastic Hive player should definitely buy this.

Finally a small tip for the game rule:
The original game rule is that you should put the bee in the first four moves. Many Hive players have begun this rule be adapted so that the bee has to be set in the second to fourth train. This will reduce both players start with the bee and thus there is often a draw.
