Ingenious second album

Men and Women (Incl.Bonus Tracks) (Audio CD)

Customer Review

After the debut album was already a class of its own, to Simply Red increased again with the published 1987 "Men and women".

I can remember when I hung up the LP and then listened to the first page. Each of the five songs was brilliant and although there were very different titles. To the wonderful "The Right Thing" which invites one for the record type in and simply good mood.

"Infidelity" is a bit slower than the previous titles, but lives very Mich Hucknalls singing, the backround and the great Saxophone. Matching and awesome sequel to "The Right Thing"

"Suffer" is a wonderful title that mutates into a catchy despite its simplicity, especially by the voice and the magnificent chorus. Everything is great here.

"I will not feel bad" is also a real smasher, the voice is alive and entrains the Soul in Mick Hucknalls.

At the end of that first LP side it was very slow and contemplative. In "Everytime We Say Goodbye" is a cover song of Cole Porter classic and this is shown incredibly intense, so I still get goosebumps when listening to the track today. The real crowning culmination of a perfect record page.

The second page was then continued with "Let me have it all", that unfortunately could not quite match the brilliant first side of the LP, but a strong song.

Also "Move on out" no longer comes as quite reach the level of the first LP side, but a good title. But for me the weakest of the CD.

The highlight of the second LP side is "Love Fire" that keeps up the quality easily with the first LP side and thus is very striking. Really a great song, the very well like it here in the single version.

"Shine" is somewhat reminiscent of a weaker version of "The Right Thing"

The last track "Maybe someday" is a catchy title that not only quickly but goes into the ear, but this also leaves just as quickly.

As a bonus, there is the Maxi versions of "The Right Thing (Extended Version", "Infidility (Strecht Mix)" and "Love Fire (Massive Red Mix), all of which are very well done, little except perhaps the Massive Red Mix of Love Fire which does not quite measure up to the original version.
Also located as a bonus, a live version of "Every Time We Say Goodbye" that has it all and is very intimate, and the beautiful 1987 version of "Broken Man", and the distinctive "Lady Govinda's room".

The bonus items are very good completion of a brilliant second album and offer Simply Red in 1987 in real top form. For me, even the best album because here everything is just right.
