August, 10, never went to school, his mother taught him everything. Except this year, he has to go in sixth and his parents would enroll in the regular school curriculum because they can no longer keep pace. But they hesitate because their son has a face deformation complicated name from birth. For his family, this child is a gift of the century, for others, it's a monster.
Between pity, horror, friendship, tolerance ... August will discover that the monster is not the one we think.
The novel is divided into different parts which the narrator is always different, either August, Via (his sister), Summer or Jack (his friends) ... This makes the story more attractive, we have the perspective different characters in the story, always centered around one person, and we well know how they feel against the boy, compared with other ...
By cons, there are some that I totally displeased. It is that of Justin's boyfriend Via. Is it a mistake in my edition or is it normal that there are neither quotes for dialogs or uppercase? This bothered me a lot in my reading, it was very ugly. In addition, his perspective is not really useful to the story.
And the point of view of parents fail me because they must also be times when, even if they love their son, are tired.
August is really a boy endearing. He knows he is not like everyone else and even if people's eyes hurt him, he tries to take it with humor and self-mockery. He has to live with that look.
Via its big sister, is also endearing because she loves her brother but she still wants to hide his new comrades (entering high school), that it has a facial deformity. She does not want to be seen through and just wants to be a girl like any other.
Summer and Jack, friends of August, are very kind, faithful.
It is unfortunate that the feelings of the parents are not more expressed, I would have wanted to know more about them.
This novel is full of emotions, from beginning to end. We go through different feelings like pity, anger, sadness, joy ... Each situation of history makes us feel a little something, you can not remain indifferent to what happens in August.
