Janua vera: Stories of the Old Kingdom (Paperback)

Customer Review

An excellent collection of new, much better than all the texts I read fantasy for months ...

The writing style is excellent, and worked very rich, sometimes a little too ornate and decorated with a little too much for his own good vocabulary, but in any case, every page, every word, every line of the text was written with great care. The pace and direction of the story are also excellent.

I understand the reservations of some other reviews that can be found on Amazon ("talent why?") Because many of these new sometimes neglect some narrative side has mainly intended to give a spotlight on such or that aspect of his world, to live this or that aspect of his imaginary world. But cons, as this author is a born storyteller, I felt very well in these texts, they actually tell a story with a plot (such as "Dandy" or "The Service des Dames") or are more descriptive (like Janua Vera or Montefellone).

Most of his texts are somewhere between the narrative and the descriptive side side: "Montefellone" happens to be exciting with what is essentially tactical description of a tough battle, complicated and decisive; "The Tale of Suzelle" is up to the narrative level as a fall is far from living up to the poetry of the rest of the story -that I found very touchante- but the role of this tale is before while introducing the presence of the Elves in the Old Kingdoms. And even in the very good story "A very precious offering," we discern the will to send a spotlight on the magic and mysteries of the Old Goddess ...

It also changes register with surprising ease, eg from emotion (Suzelle) humor and farce (Day Guigne), and battles with intimate tales.

The brief historical chronology of the Old Kingdoms which closes this collection marks the origins of this author in the role play (and has little interest outside of this framework), but as George Martin and a handful of others, Jaworski has transcended this starting point and do literary work from this rich fantasy material. It has extremely different qualities from those of Martin and can hardly be compared to him (as Martin base while on very human characters in their complexity, their qualities, their weaknesses and even their inhumanity as Jaworski revives universe creation and with a large mural where the characters are less central) but in its way, it also transcends the genre of fantasy role-players and the origins of these stories.
In short, at this stage of comment, you must already doubt whether you can feel involved in his world or not, and if you can feel concerned, read at the first opportunity: you will not regret it, it's great .

Also, this news is a "appetizer" for the really big novel "Winning the war" to which I will soon attack me. It is probably useful to start with the "out-Doeuvre" before addressing the romance (or at least read the new "Dandy" is the first appearance of a key character in the novel), and in any case, c is a very interesting read.
