TechniSat TechniStar S1 HDTV Digital Satellite Receiver (CI + slot, HDMI, Conax card reader, PVR-Ready) (Electronics)

Customer Review

UPDATE JANUARY 2012:
the Technisat S1 is no longer produced. Comes from Amazon a umetikettierter S1 + what with all the bullshit HD + - bring provisions with you. (Recognizable by the re-adhesion of the model, silver instead of black remote control and the menu can also be read + S1). Software updates for S1 are not possible. For the S1 + is not working correctly; lasting crashes, automat. Off TV + audio system during operation, etc.
The S1 was a very good device - 4 stars. The S1 + is a device (0 stars) which I must advise each.

There are the peculiarities of the individual receiver enough to read in other reviews. As both units are traded in various journals as a top recommendation, I would like to compare the two devices here (as of 07.07.2010 both devices with the latest software - to be observed, especially when relatively new Technisat to be where now resolved almost all issues. seem, furthermore I have where necessary / known 09/2011 updates added)

First things first - PICTURE QUALITY:
HD: both provide a very good picture. 10/10
SD: Again, both provide an acceptable image in the upscaling and there are certainly both the currently better devices in the market in this price category, which concerns upscaling. However, the Technisat nose has in SD material forward, because it produces less "noise" and thus creates a more pleasant image. Also "oversubscribed" of Technisat the edges are not as strong as it can be partially already bothersome at Kathrein. [Tested on a Sharp Aquos, all image filter disabled]. Switching the screen size (4: 4, 16: 9, etc.) dominated the Technisat better. Technisat 7/10, 6/10 Kathrein

OPERATIONAL:
Here clearly the scores Kathrein (not both devices in the energy-hungry Quick Start Mode)

SWITCHING:
Is clearly in favor of Technisat. Here also HD-SD-HD is an almost liquid switching, possible. The Kathrein takes part too long, that even the TV now points back to the HDMI input used for the black image. Who specifically best one. Channel switches, the this will not bother you. Who zaps like should rather resort to Technisat.

Reception quality:
Seems to be better when Kathrein; When Technisat I had for the ORF Bouquet antenna nachadjustieren rid of image artifacts.

LANGUAGES:
For me there is no difference detected. When Technisat and now also at Kathrein (reviewer's Update 09/2011 :) the customer can adjust the audio delay problems in both directions. For the Technisat has only one digitlaen RCA digital output, the Kathrein has additionally an optical digital output.
A bit annoying when Kathrein: When switching tone comes first, then image, 2 seconds of audio-break, then again sound.

REMOTE CONTROL:
Kathrein is better in your hand, but I personally find the Technisat "logically" built and faster "blind" use. Unfortunately me a direct dial button on the remote control where I can quickly adjust the scaling is missing from the Technisat. (For Austrians interesting: The selection of the Länder programs is via a button when ORF2 is turned easy to handle when Technisat Not all stations are individually stored in the list..)

Channel installation / start-up:
The initial start-up is very quick and easily performed in both. Update via satellite and USB possible with both. Kathrein offers the advantage that the program lists can be edited on the PC, however, is among the favorites individual / overall list not a numerical ranking possible, which actually devalues the editing on the PC again.

PVR (recording / timeshift):
With a connected Freecom hard drive on both devices without any problems and without jerking pictures. When Technisat user-friendly and a little faster. Works very well with Timeshift and recording from the OFF mode.
TIP for HDD purchase: The hard drive may depend on only one USB cable. Passive disks (without PSU) with a double USB plug (ie 2 * to connect to USB, so that they get enough power) do not function as such more than 500 mah draw. Also not suitable: hard drives with a built-in "Start-button" for sync / backup.
The Kathrein seems far more "receptive joyful" at ext. To be hard drives. In various forums is spoken at Technisat of a new hardware version (suffix x.1), when there will be fewer problems (ev. More output current for USB port? Amazon has yet 05.07.2010 delivered me a x.0 on was tested the Caution - below Update from 02.11.2011)

HDCP (control of on-off on TV via satellite receiver):
Works at Kathrein with no problems, the Technisat can thanks also update now (reviewer's update 09/2011).

Optical equipment:
The Kathrein is rather large, but the power supply is integrated, but is visually like a 10 year old machine. Design is a foreign word to Kathrein. For the Kathrein scores with a digit. Display can also display the station name. TechniSat has to be the usual from Technisat numeric short display - here rectification urgently attached. For the Technisat "stylish" and also some smaller, since the power supply is to be connected externally.

WARRANTY:
Kathrein offers 2 years, Technisat of registering on the website for an extra year, so 3 years.

CI slot:
In both devices, unfortunately, only 1 slot for recording encryption modules, the Technisat also CI + certified (Kathrein have to this the successor Kathrein UFS905sw satellite receiver (HD-Ready, HDTV, DVB-S) buy.).

CONCLUSION:
As with most tests of scientific journals of Technisat has the nose slightly forward. Something better SD upscaling, and faster switching times are the predominant advantages of Technisat. The Kathrein apparently has a slightly stronger receiver part, for he has a rather not so intuitive as the Technisat. Even the upgrade to 3-year warranty with registration on the website of the manufacturer speak for myself for the Technisat.

UPDATE 27/10/2010:
Meanwhile, had the ext. PSU (loud high frequency whistle) and the remote control to be replaced (no function) ... Technisat refers in this case with standard mails do not really respond to question at dealer where purchased or recommended in the case of remote control - despite Guarantee - to buy new ... somehow seems here a little problem to have crept in quality assurance ...

UPDATE 02/11/2011:
I have a family to also set a Technisat; Unfortunately, apparently almost no USB hard drives for the Technisat are suitable; I had a Freecom III bought (only later production date, more memory) - this hard drive has been rejected by the receiver. Technisat not sell mittleweile itself a "suitable" hard drive, but at twice the price of a hard drive of a brand manufacturer ... Currently works a Seagate Expansion 500GB ST905004EXD101-RK SEAGATE Expansion Portable External Hard Drive - 500 GB, black. Should also work the Intenso Memory Station 500GB External Hard Drive (6.4 cm (2.5 inches), USB-Y cable) White - It should be noted, if the disk is not working, that the Y-cable to the other USB connector is to be used.
