"The Impulse Story" is a sort of "best of" of titles that Keith Jarrett 1973-1976 with his "American Quartet" for - has recorded label "Impulse". Along with Charlie Haden (b), Paul Motian (drums) and Dewey Redman (sax) and some other musicians still has Jarrett for "Impulse" received a total of eight plates, the distillate can be heard on this fine samplers. Very striking is instantly much greater musical range of "American Quartet", as compared to the later trio, which has nevertheless prescribed mainly the interpretation of standards, while used primarily repetitive knitting patterns. This greater bandwidth ranges from simple motifs on Blue worn, quiet piano pieces, swing, bebop, cool jazz to wild-expressive free jazz and abundant experimental style mixes. This was very time typical of the early and mid-seventies. Apply the mixture to "The Impulse Story" is therefore equally exciting as it is risky. One can surely find one hand styles that appeal to a while you will be overused in other pieces already badly and yet hardly finds an access. "Konya" example provides hard tolerable Saxophone Genöle and also for the piece with the extraordinarily beautiful title "Mushi Mushi" must have the correct calibrated jazz ears. On the other hand, there are also fantastic songs like "Treasure Iceland" or the (almost) pure piano numbers "Introduction - Yaqui Indian Folk Song" or composed by Paul Motian "Victoria". The disc is a total lot easier than some other publications ear of Jarrett on the "Impulse" - label, such as "2-on-1" disc "Mysteries / Shades". Of course, you have to listen at Jarrett always repeatedly, that's why despite some criticisms: Four stars for "The Impulse Story".
