Large scale - many details

I want to talk about my experience with the model kit no. 05091 of Revell today. It involves an American destroyer of Fletcher-class scale of 1: 144, built in 1942. The kit has come the market in 2008 and promoted accordingly in great detail with New mold. One has the choice between two variants, the type USS Fletcher DD-445 or DD-451 USS Chevalier when delivered in 1942. The latter is then displayed on the cardboard packaging (side).
Particularly appealing to the kit is the large scale, the finished model is, after nearly 80 cm long. When it comes to detailing some goes there so more than, say, in 1: 350th And with the extravagant camouflage type of ship Fletcher, the model is at the end of an eyecatcher.
As the assigned by Revell level 5 (skill level) already promises, is a kit for the highest craft standards. This note he will undoubtedly do justice. Despite the relatively large scale, however, the weaknesses of the kit are in various details. Here is evident how quickly the limits of PVC spray technology are achieved. The biggest drawback are the rails, followed by the radar screens and the Wabo-end frameworks. I recommend this model strongly the use of photo-etched parts of Eduard (BIG ED ​​5305). Although the investment of more than 70 euros again appear high, the model but enrich immensely! Especially as the Eduard guide is perfectly matched to the Revell-building instructions. This is by the way very clear and easy to understand. A livery plan of the two versions lies in the scale of 1: 288 in Extra.
A word to the railings. Some railings or handrails are fully present in the Revell kit, ie you have to string together these. But the majority is for a Sisyphean task. There are numerous individual supports, which then individually glued to be connected with each other with the included black star twisting 3-fold (!). This deters duly, especially since it is on the packaging of the kit Photo also not particularly successful. With the above-mentioned photo-etched set by Eduard one goes out of the way of trouble. Here all the rails are all ready, they are cut out on the whole, they stuck with superglue to finish! And it looks good too! I have certainly chosen this variant. (Tip: paint before cutting out railings!)
In the end, it would be desirable that the kit of home accompanied from photo-etched. For this you will also accept a slightly higher price, I think.
Who wants to go even further, can replace the plastic barrels by those made of brass, of course, cost extra again, but looks even more realistic. For example, of BUT A144S01 in set for about 10 euros.
Otherwise, processing and fit is excellent. Overall my construction of this model has a lot of fun.
