Customer Review

Hello dear readers,

the most important thing first: This is about the WNR3500Lv2 (not to be confused with WNR3500v2!) - I had Amazon as selected distributors. Now to the actual review: I had bought a little over 2 years my WNR3500L, of which I was excited since day one. Finally, the Internet went smoothly and fluently, at last there was no more disconnections. The task of WNR3500L was to bring a household with 3 smartphones, 2 laptops, 1 console and 2 PCs over 2 floors and into the Internet. For the upper floor we had initially used a simple Fast Ethernet Switch. This had, however, are very quickly replaced with a cheap wireless router, because the wireless signal of WNR3500L only attenuated (2 - 3 out of 5 bars) reached the 2nd floor. This is honestly the only weak point of this device. Why is it so, is obvious: there are no external antennas available, not even when v2. And the cheap router I had exchanged in May against the WNR3500Lv2 to convert my home network to Gigabit because at the time also a NAS has been added.
I can not say much because it was already down with me after the first week on the standard firmware unfortunately. My little tests showed that my Tomato online rate raised by an average of about 120 Kbytes / s (have DSL 16+) - a super value, I think. In addition to performance-thrusts, open the Open Source firmwares also opportunities that are normally only found in enterprise routers: VPN Support, Printer Sharing, detailed QoS management, VLAN virtual wireless networks, additional support for NTFS, EXT3 / 4 and HFS / + when using a medium as NAS. Apart from all the new toys that bring the Open Source firmwares, this run too damn stable (at least Tomato): both my router uptimes have now 33 days. I had, however, they restarted manually because I had changed the configuration. For more details on Open Source firmwares can be found at [...]

Buyer should make it that there are 2 versions. Once the PES and once the GRS. You should actually only differ in the product packaging and manuals. GRS is intended for the German space, PES for Europe (thus based on the product packaging (and possibly also the manual) in English before). At that time there were WNR3500L problems with the power supplies: they made noise. My power supply was then exchanged immediately by Netgear. The included power supply of WNR3500Lv2 not buzzed; here apparently Netgear has improved.
The most important changes under the hood are actually the enlarged Flash ROM (8MB -> 128MB), the enlarged memory (64MB -> 128MB) and the faster processor (453MHz Broadcom BCM4716 -> 480MHz Broadcom BCM5357). But I have to say that I can garkeinen difference between the routers notice (similar to DDR3-1600 to DDR3-1866 - no one will notice a difference). Both take even the huge ROM that I plan FLASHE and both do their work quickly and reliably.

The bottom line of WNR3500L / WNR3500Lv2 is struck up with 3rd party firmware a super router that is actively supported by the open source community. The flash itself is easy: you download the firmware on the Internet down, plays over the internal menu of the router, a Mini firmware on (only at the first flash process necessary) and then flashes on the mini firmware to the big firmware to. It is stable, fast and offers many more options than you actually need. Solely the wireless performance is not quite optimal. With the use of the second router we have on both floors everywhere 5/5 bar (both routers are connected via a wireless network bridge, ie that our equipment only see 1 WLAN network with 2 routers and automatically log where it better Reception have). Is of course different from house to house. I would recommend this product definitely! Who does not want to Netgear or problems in the past had can watch alternatively still the device from ASUS. In my opinion, these are the only products in this price range that can compete with the WNR3500L.

I hope I could help you with this review and that my text has not suffered too much under the time (it's just 2:23; D)!
