One thing first: I run the lens on the D300 (1.5 crop factor). It replaces the Tamron SP AF with me 17-50mm Di II VC 2.8.
The focal length range I find perfectly to the D300s. With the shortest focal length of 24 mm while the wide angle is lost something. But when I look at my pictures of the whole last year, I have used the range of 17-24 mm hardly ever.
The lens comes with me so far mainly for portraits, landscapes and long exposures (DRI) for use. Here are my experiences:
Portraits:
The high light intensity of 2.8 to be very nice people exempt from the background. It even wonderful contrast images have been coming out at full aperture. This is precisely one of the great advantages over the Tamron, the dynamic range is stunning (I find no other word for a).
Thanks to the extraordinary sharpness seen in portraits every pore, but of course every blemish ;-) I asked unedited portraits I've done with this objective, in the fotocommunity. They did not believe that one can depict the eyes as sharp entirely without finishing eg me. I think that says a lot ...
Landscapes:
Again I was amazed primarily of high contrast range. The pictures are wonderful rich in contrast, even in overcast weather, the sky reserves structure and does not eat out. Trees and shrubs are rich in detail displayed, when "Pixelpeeping" you can see even the finest ramifications.
Long exposures and DRIs:
WOW !!!
What can I say, I am thrilled !! Light sources such. As streetlights or lights are so precise displayed, as I have never seen it. Since eating from nothing, the light sources are displayed as a point rather than a blown-out white surface. You get accurate, depending on exposure, star-shaped rays instead of light "mud" as in popularly priced lenses.
Other:
The lens is relatively heavy. On the D300 is slightly top-heavy with no additional battery grip. With battery grip is perfect, the camera is well balanced and fits comfortably in your hand.
The lens does not have VR, which has first put me off even from the purchase. In retrospect, however, it does not bother me, the camera is hard and well in the hand and you can thus maintain relatively quiet.
Conclusion:
Who does not scare the high purchase price, it is thoroughly recommended. I use only this lens and the also highly recommended Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 105mm 1: 2.8G VR.
