Loves and suffering

Songs And Dances From Flanders: Susato, Liegeois, Phalèse Clemens Non Papa, De La Rue (CD)

Customer Review

This remarkable album presents excerpts of the three Musyck Boexkens (Music Books) published by Tielman Susato in Antwerp, as well as musical impressions of Peter Phalèse (Phalesius) in Leuven, all published in the 16th century (one exception: the song No. 7 Pierre de la Rue).
The album contains, firstly, dances (instrumental pieces) and, second, songs whose themes are love (also physical) and religion.

Texts
In the songs of love, this feeling nest quune source of suffering. In (. 2 anon) love is a prison; in (5- J. Venders), I betrayed; in (11 N. Liège) is cause for grief and torment; in (18 L. Episcopius) I am wounded by love for her immense as jéprouve; in (7 P. Rue) lamoureux pray not mabandonnez.
The (10 anon.) Evokes a tryst with a bagpiper, while (14 anon.) Warns Manon (pars pro toto for ViaMichelin gent girls) ensure his jug. Did she do?
Even the religious texts are only prayers, as in (8 J. Clemens non Papa) I would implore your kindness, my Lord, my life is so bitter that it seems to me to die. But his prayer will be heard? Perhaps, because for (17 C. Boscoop) the goodness of God will not perish.

Music
In his books, T. Susato has made arrangements of existing songs, like here a C. Sermisy (6 Dont just that); The same applies to P. Phalèse, here C. Janequin (9 Battle) and a C. Sermisy (16 joly boys).
The most brilliant pieces in this recital are
by the purity of their melodies: the (14 anon.) and (7 - P. de la Rue) with the last and more the beauty of counterpoint lute / voice and slow imitations.
by rhythm and its changes, and variations on beautiful melodies: the compositions of P. Phalèse (9, 13, 16, 19) and T. Susato (1 Donna, 4 - Mille Ducas in vostre bource and 6 Dont just that).
by the beauty of the melody, slow its imitations and its counterpoint voice / instrument: the composition 18 - L. Episcopius.
its echoes, its variations and its counterpoint voice / instruments: anonymous 10 A composition piper.

The recital is beautifully played and sung by the Currende Consort Capella Sancti Michaelis and headed Derik Van Nevel.
All texts are translated into four languages, including French.
One regret: the length of the pieces indicated in the booklet back is not always accurate (1.4, 6, 9, 13, 16,19).

This album is a gem.
