Originally purchased as a very good sounding 180g vinyl disk in Amsterdam (Dutch pressure of 'Bovema'), I was happy with the full sound. And compared to German pressure, which ever did not satisfy me, because they do not "live", so I was well served.
It started the CD era and I bought the album in the "2 original album on Compact Disc 1" CD version. What a disappointment! Where were the abysmal Basse, where the heights? I got myself out of desperation, the same CD, this time as US imports (minimal difference in sound) ... frustration!
But then, in 1994, brought MOTOWN in the "Motown Master Series" album as a fantastic sounding CD out again. Black slipcase, silver embossed writing, in a slightly enlarged booklet and ... a newly remastered CD. The Hammer !!!
Never before (not even on 180 g vinyl) the music sounded so powerful and yet so wonderfully transparent, simply perfect.
I am keeping this CD, which is long out of print (US-Import), as my eyeball. I have now in addition the deluxe version, which interests me mainly because of alternative and single versions and ..., I stick to it: The black jewel is unsurpassed sound, the original album on the deluxe version on the other hand sounds underpowered ,
My tip:
If still available anywhere, buy it now (at almost any price), it sounds huge!

And wrote the music critic F.Schöler this CD pressing in 'Stereo' no. 11/1994
"A very strong plant, namely its probably all other outstanding masterpiece is Marvin Gaye" What's Going On "(...) This has now been copied in 20-bit technology and then re-released in a slipcase with lyrics and liner notes. The resulting sound is stunning "
