Deus Ex: Human Revolution Limited Edition (computer game)

Customer Review

Normally, one should limit in his review to the essentials is yes. Keeping a long story short. But in Deus Ex, I must make an exception.
I for 15 years Video Games of all kinds and there are certainly games that I've played much longer and more intense than the Deus Ex series. But should ask me what is the best game of the last 15 years for me someone, I would not respond to superior immediately with "Deus Ex 1". No game has so captivated me, so cast a spell and fascinated - and still does ..

I've played through Deus Ex 1 in recent years since release approximately 15x. It has become almost an annual ritual. And each time it grabs me again! And I think after 15x play through, I can say: I have just about everything discovered in Deus Ex 1!

After Deus Ex 2 in my opinion, both as a series successor as well as the video game itself was a total letdown and just in the grottigen PC port Maximum would get 1 out of 5 stars from me, of course I was looking forward to the 3rd part.
I had heard and seen a lot of positive in the preliminary reports and was sure that the game will be good.
But my expectations were risen so much in recent years that I was also sure that the game Deus Ex 1 may not exceed - no matter how good it is.
And I also have a very simple explanation: It is this phenomenon that it is better in memory has all the games from the past than they actually are. I can vehemently reject, because the last time is by playing only half a year ago.
Rather, it is like reading a book compared to film. A film can - despite good idea or story - fail because of so many things. A book, however, lets the imagination run wild. It forms its own universe and fills in the gaps with your own visions.
Just as it is with Deus Ex 1. Anyone age 15 I would have money to pay for Deus Ex to play 1. The graphics were not more than average, even for that time. Who is happening because nowadays even something on?
The environment was simple and very cold, the characters did not really have a gesture or facial expressions and there were no special effects or animations.
But just because the visualization was kept to a minimum, you had to put in the game a lot of imagination. Although I find the timeless graphics of Deus Ex 1 than that of Deus Ex 2. There were, of course, the stunning game world, the atmosphere, the music, etc. which are all like a gear meshed perfectly.
But ultimately it was not just any Deus Ex Deus Ex but MY story that will never be forgotten.

------

After the long preface we come finally to the current part.

In fact, it took me a long time to Deus Ex 3 to play. Too great was the fear of disappointment. Even after purchase and after the introduction of Level I inserted a more-week break until I have finally played out in a jerk.

And? What's the score? Now, Deus Ex 3 very much of Deus Ex 1 copied and with what? Rightly! In any other game I would attach as a criticism, but in this case, I am grateful. Many missions, locations, characters remind me of the old part (I only say: Hangar / ship, factory / warehouse, jammers, underground base, a nightclub, a helicopter pilot, etc.) Of course nothing worked lukewarm, but packaged in a new dress.
When we're on the subject the same. The graphics can be compared with the old part. No, of course the graphics of Deus Ex 3 is ten years old. But compared to other games Deus Ex is only average. The Artdesign is of course one of the best in 2011, the world seems consistent and nice to look at. And the cutscenes make looks very impressive! But just when character design and some surrounding objects have been previously well again wiped with the Let bygones be bygones. And Square Enix, what the hell did you think you in the helicopter? He looks to me like a "chrome car" mod of GTA 3. But for someone like me, the graphics should plediert for a ten year old game be only secondary. And so it is even. She is beautiful and harmonious, but I've seen better.
The lip sync (in German), however, is absolutely unacceptable!

Playful, the developers have also retained the good old concept. It has again the choice to sneak through ventilation shafts, as Rambo with all sorts of weapons to shoot to jump as a sniper from roof to roof, or a hacker turrets against the enemy to direct more. And it will surely again be some players who play through (except for a few exceptions) even without killing the game. Again, there are several paths to the goal.
But never I almost naturally chose the short cut in a game. The level design invites to a downright and rewarded with additional experience points. As Rambo has, however, constantly struggling with ammunition poverty, but comes just at the "bosses" cope better.
And just as a little hacking minigame is fun. The only problem is that it all teeming with PCs, some of which have the same content. Crack one does it then but because one wants to miss out on anything. Taking this seriously, is spending is one-third of the season only with hoes.

Let us briefly to the augmentations. While Deus Ex 1 had a simple "pick from 20 improvements from 10" + some character improvement, it was decided in Deus Ex 3 for a clear improvement tree. While rather on the principle of "quantity instead of quality" vorgangen in Deus Ex 1, all the improvements are really the new part makes sense and allow new approaches. But I could not quite get used to the system. The problem is that man - just the beginning - let lie left many obvious ways must because we have just chosen a different reasonable and necessary augmentation. Until one time everything has important unlocked, steals a constantly miss the feeling something.
For example, I am at the beginning often made on ventilation shafts that went deep down and lay on the ground items. To me you were unattainable because I had the right augmentation to large drop heights to overcome yet. In the end, the improvements are not as specializations in the old part but are provided to pad to the perfect fighting machine. This could have been a better solution.

While Deus Ex was 1 points with its simple, at any time but coherent and compelling sinister game world, flooded Deus Ex 3 a designed with a vision to the smallest detail. There are a number of fictitious companies, banners, TV ads and radio announcements. I'm really impressed how much effort you have made yourself. The environment looks so alive. One never has the impression that repeat any environment elements permanently. And hey: I have never seen such beautiful and varied showcase as in Deus Ex Human Revolution.
Of course again numerous newspaper articles, PDAs and e-mails that can be read to finally merge with fiction. I missed it unfortunately, patience, just like in Deus Ex 1. However, only the presence and the opportunity is there to do a good feeling. It's fun to explore the game world.
There are in Deus Ex 3 several side missions that were really designed lovingly and not act like a cheap knock-offs of the main story.

That was the freestyle, we now come to the duty, the hard core of the Deus Ex series.
Let's start with the atmosphere. As mentioned game world and level design are top notch. But a good atmosphere has also another, less tangible component. Deus Ex 1 was able to build such a gloomy Endzeitsimmung that by playing even after 15x remains banned sitting in front of the focusing screen. In Deus Ex Human Revolution, the atmosphere is oppressive and exciting. But it is not like in the predecessor like a tent over the whole game eager but is often somewhat superficial.
Unfortunately you do not get as much of the misery and the basic problem, as in the predecessor. While one was in Deus Ex 1 still surrounded by neglected and helpless civilians who have the "Gray Death" suffered and lived in a corresponding ambient, the main story takes place in the new part but a bit off the "road" from. Unfortunately, the depth or the sword of Damocles, the schebt over the entire game world is missing.

We come to the next mandatory part of a Deus Ex game: The Story.
Deus Ex 1 begins harmless and vulgar. One suspects not yet what's coming at you. But from mission to mission is built around you, then that repeatedly breaks down, is rebuilt and at the end of the whole story strands are satisfactorily completed a giant house of cards. Conspiracies, intrigue, secret organizations. The game is full of revelations and discoveries that leave the player with a "Wow". There are many "magic moments" that remain in your memory.
Deus Ex 3 tries, much of this successful formula to copy and make it often also. It will be an exciting construct up and you look expectantly forward. But at the peak of throwing a game in the final mission and it's over. It is bombarded by so many exciting game elements and ideas that are all but not told to the end. In short: it is simply overloaded.
The story, which is then also tells about the end is also exciting and entertaining. The basic idea is great, but in many places lacks the depth and polish. And nothing is worse than an unfinished story that can stand the player at a loss.
I was a bit disappointed that the game has such a quick end.
The story about the conspiracy and Illuminati acts partly well put. While you will be slowly introduced to the matter in the first part, it is the third part after a while simply: Hah, this augmented whipping boys, these are the henchmen of the Illuminati. Sometimes a small spark conspiracy flair comes on, but does not want to ignite the fire.

One can summarize it this way: While Deus Ex 1 a well thought out to the smallest detail Story presents, you have to use as a player due to the simpler visualization to his imagination to imagine the story. In Deus Ex 3 will be presented with a pefekten staging, many story elements must piece together themselves and think it through in your head.

Another negative point that would have actually led to a devaluation of almost 3 star, is the fact that there is actually no real freedom in the game, at least with regard to the story. Okay, we've clarified that you can solve each mission in a variety of ways. In addition, there are already a few decisions that have a minimal impact on the further course of the game, such as the fact whether you kill somebody or not. The real decision will be approximately 1 minute before the final whistle. In Deus Ex 1, there was an hour left in the game, so not really early. By and large, the story was exactly linear.
This does not have to be necessarily negative. But that the game world is not responding to an already bad. I have the game thereafter played directly a second time and me exactly chosen the other way: Instead of almost anyone to kill, I have all killed. And with all I mean really ALL! And? Nix!
Not even Sarif (the boss of the protagonist) has complained that I killed two of its scientists in the street. I have emptied entire neighborhoods, made police stations deserted, smoked clubs. I now do not expect the game changes completely. But you could go into it somewhere once in a dialog ?!
In Deus Ex 1, for example, to Manderley complained when surprisingly kills an allied UNATCO soldier in the first mission. Other actions are commented on the comlink. 3 to bring the lack of this feedback in Deus Ex as criticism Klint petty. However, now almost ten years have passed and you can expect a bit more than one game world without feedback.
Only the "Not in the ladies 'room' you will find an allusion in the third part again.
The today make many games that want to be less of a role-playing game like Deus Ex a lot better!

I have noticed a lot of parallels to Fallout 3. Here also a freedom is a tricked - and many also fall even purely plan. The bottom line was the difference between good and evil (what is known as "Karma" a game element was): Either I am friendly behaving and doing all of the missions (Good) or I just kill everyone and the world is - except for a few immortal errant NPCs - without feedback easily cleared (evil).
That some characters are immortal again, because I am already used to it. At least solves the game this predicament in some places very well.

We Hold: Real freedom is only when you run the missions. The story is, with few exceptions have little influence very linear and chooses one minute before closing. That's not necessarily a negative point, but the feedback from the game world on one's actions is partially shockingly low. Who wants to be truly free and does not proceed according to the book, quickly reaches its limits.

---

Unfortunately, the game world is easier to see through as in Deus Ex 1. I have as I said yet discovered by 10x play through things that I have not previously thought possible. And since we are talking not only of any secret rooms with ammunition and weapons. I need only recall the frozen DeBeers behind Everett wall mirror. Despite the outdated technology Deus Ex 1 acts so vividly on his way.
Deus Ex 3's after 2-3x by playing completely see through and therefore does not produce so great fascination as the first part. For me one of the main reasons why Deus Ex 3 a good game and Deus Ex 1, however, is a masterpiece.

---

Somehow the epic soundtracks have been missing, the Deus Ex 1 have done so unique. Every time I hear the theme song I get goosebumps. In Deus Ex 3 I can remember really to no music. Maybe it's simply because it is too quiet. But I've played with the basic settings.

------

Conclusion: A successor to Deus Ex 1 has already difficult. Actually it is in the iron fans doomed and any criticism is mostly whining at a high level. But Deus Ex Human Revolution fights well.
Playful and graphically Deus Ex 3 is miles ahead of the ten year old predecessor course. On the whole, one can also hold: Deus Ex 3 is a fun and beautiful game experience that you can recommend any videogames friend without hesitation.
But who wants to compete with the Master has to be good in his parade disciplines. While you can turn a few eyes in terms of atmosphere here and there, I was a bit disappointed in terms of 3 Story Deus Ex. Not that the story would be bad or boring. She's just too overloaded with quite good ideas, but not many of which are told to end. At the climax of the story you will be transported roughly the end and has a comfortable manner can choose a button for one of the four corners. It simply lacks a completed story arc.
Of course, a game can not be arbitrarily complex, but if you stand as a player at the end of so many loose ends that could have been so happy to be deepened or merged, then that can not be good! I would have liked it better if you might concentrate on fewer issues that had that point very exhausted profound.

Probably had to Deus Ex Human Revolution - like most games - something mainstreamiger be and the publication on console probably cost a bit of depth. The balancing act between fans and newcomers use is therefore recruit well done the bottom line.

Deus Ex Human Revolution is a worthy successor who has not let me down. But at the end of the day I stay with the statement: Deus Ex 1 is for me the best game of the past 15 years!

------

Finally, three examples of unfinished story strands. I try to avoid spoilers, but who wants to play it safe, rises here, dear.

1. In Deus Ex 1 was the brother Paul Denton, the one accompanied the whole game and to which one has built an emotional bond. His salvation was a great motivator and after that it was a satisfaction to have him at his side.
The same is also available in Deus Ex 3. I have to admit that the salvation of the character for a long time was my only motivation. And after you've saved them? If you see them again briefly in Comlink ?! Very sobering.

2. Also KI's play an important role again. In the first part we met on numerous AI's on you could bring in a lot of experience and have completed quite a compelling story on its own.
In Deus Ex 3, there is an AI, where you meet briefly in the game again, the short is an eye opener and is the advisor for the possible endings at the end. This could have been safely omit.

3. In Deus Ex 1 the counterparty nor real opponents were full of character that have been previously acquainted closely. The confrontation was the conclusion of an exciting story on the train one has ever worked. Gunther, Navarre, Simon Page, Chow ...
In Deus Ex Human Revolution one sees his opponents in advance also short, but so really a lot you can learn about them not.
You will then one whose death does not really mean by good old computer games manner shortly before the end of the level as a final boss with special abilities thrown against something. Also there are many other very dubious people their exact role or meaning remains open.

These three examples are indicative of many other game elements where it is similar.
It is this circumstance leads in my review also to the devaluation on 4 stars.

Supplement: The Missing Link
Like almost every game of our time offers Deus Ex Human Revolution also a paid DLC. As a fan of a series are accessed course immediately. And in case you get really offer what in return. An approximately five-hour history, the main game of the inferior quality of nowhere and takes place in a time in which the main game at a travel simply skips a few days. Probably this part was removed the main game just before release, because it was not deemed so important to the main story.
The price / performance ratio. But that the DLC is a stand-alone program is where you practically start again from 0 and all its items, augmentations and credit loses, I find a bad solution. One must augementieren quite different from the main game, as some improvements are less significant because of the brevity and closed game world. Somehow the reference goes to the main game thus partially lost and it is difficult to DLC in a big whole integrate.
