Ahead of course various tests were read, studied resolution charts and evaluated customer reviews - clear who does not do that. Man eventually wants to get a rough premonition whether the lens at all out of the question. Since the tests turn out to be very good and sometimes very disappointing, I was hoping to land a good grip and offered as the silver version at Amazon.com temporarily considerably cheaper for about 450 euros was also ordered. I will stop there, even for this relatively low price I have the lens ends up being sent to Amazon.com back because the overall result has me very disappointed. Below note form the pros and cons from my personal point of view:
+ Processing and haptics of the lens are clearly worthy of top class and the premium classification of Olympus
+ Autofocus works extremely quickly and accurately
+ Bokeh the depth of field is harmonious and soft
+ Manual focus ring is cleverly solved
+ Low distortion at Olympus Pen
- Sharpness even in the center at maximum aperture 1.8 rather poor and spongy
- Stopping down to 2.5 to 2.8 improves the sharpness in the center, but still not satisfactory
- Sharpness drop towards the edges falls itself clearly in the normal screen on
Although I am lucky that I got a seemingly very good imaging M.Zuiko 14-42mm delivered to my Olympus Pen, but still needs to be an objective of the premium series of Olympus with a well above average price - even more so if the missing lens hood supplied considering - surely loose with this measure or even surpass it in optical quality. And that was the copy supplied to me the M.Zuiko 17mm 1.8 is now truly not, so that ultimately made me decide whether I keep this lens only because of its high light intensity and the beautiful bokehs due and for tolerating the lack of sharpness can. But when I think about how many times I re-locating afterwards in the image processing the shot, I do not want to let limit by a spongy imaging performance me in this regard.
Let's see, maybe I order at a lower price again something the lens again and give this theoretically very attractive fixed focal length one more chance.
But in my experience, and my test images I can present no recommendation.
At points I would give 2.5 stars out of 5 - rounded, we end up with the 3 stars.
