Mike Oldfield's musical setting of a classic SiFi

The Songs of Distant Earth (Audio CD)

Customer Review

A concept album - something actually makes barely a! And then also really opulent staged in every respect and manufactures quality ...
But in 1994 that was probably still possible ... now that the music industry rauskegelt everything does not do so and so many sales, almost unthinkable. And since the good Mike has a history of Arthur C. Clark (2001: A Space Odyssey / 2001 odyssey in space; Rendevous With Rama / Rendevous with 31/439) taken to the chest: The Songs Of Distant Earth - wow, alone The title sets the imagination downright on fire !!!
1958 has been published as a short story, experienced THE SONGS ... 1986 reincarnation, is to say, in 1983 attacked Clark the idea once more, feilte to 1985 in the history of rum and offered it as a book, which was then published in 1986.
Arthur C. Clark is one of the SiFi-authors, who value scientific knowledge and the rumgondeln through space at warp 9 regarded as fantasy. He weaves a story, in which the sun of our world is an explosion before their destruction and therefore imminent the destruction of mankind. It will be built huge spaceships and equipped with everything need the future settlers. It is impossible to achieve in a position speed of light, at the beginning of even a fraction of it. Travel through the interstellar space to the nearest habitable planet thus take centuries. Frozen fetuses, put in hibernation, are sent to the stars, which are revived and brought up at the destination of robots. Since humanity but has more than a thousand years, until you fly all around the ears, are also constantly conceded research results. Almost towards the end of it, inventing the quantum drive, with which one almost reaches the speed of light succeed. So the possibility exists itself to climb in the cold chambers and carry on for the ride. Halfway to their destination one encounters an early inhabited settler world. The Cultreclash is not to be sneezed.
As far as a rough summary of the story - Mike Oldfield was probably as hard done by Clark's book that he has on the experiment, musical Umsetztung, admitted. And has fully recovered !!!
So can be found on this CD not typical for Oldfield Pop / Rock songs, but a film music (!) At its best. Similar to the killing fields of the master shows what he can do. For acoustic comparison can VANGELIS, the instrumental pieces from Pete Barden, the TRANSFER STAION BLUE by Michael Shrieve & Klaus Schulze, or Jean Michel Jarre to just to name a few sports fans use.
Mike uses hip drum loops, so that the disc does not come off frumpy, and drives efficient computer power on. His playful melodies, which he gladly einspielt with his guitar, lacking any more than his penchant for it's unusual effects and instruments. A brief bagpipe performance must be just like a full sample of the Saami songs from the title sequence of the movie PATHFINDER.
It is quite an experience when a calmed with tranquillizers Captain supercool the Startsequence runtercountet (Track 14: Crystal Clear) and then use the engines - WAAAHNSINN !!! Especially with a clever surround system, full as possible Pulle played - because then also the neighbors of what, but hey. Gregorian chants find just using, as a sample of a transfer of the Christmas message of the book of Genesis read in 1968 by astronaut Bill Anders 8th aboard the Apollo Waalgesänge alternate with almost symphonic Parts from - brimming with ideas, melodies, atmospheric pads and technical Gimmicks undundund is the trip to the stars is a real event.
The CD itself is very well mastered and can therefore convince with great sound.
The booklet includes detailed liner notes again by Arthur C. Clark personally (!), Among others, where it even omits highly of Mike Oldfield's musical interpretation. Higher ordinations go pretty much no longer! The presentation of the booklet looks almost as screenshots would have been used by a video to the music. If it is so, I would like to see the band!
Conclusion: With Mike at the stars - this one must have enjoyed! But certainly for the Shadow-On-The-Wall-Five Miles Out To-France fans not right ...
