Stephenson has no idea that in the desert, a second spaceship is stranded and still in a cave waiting to be explored. Initially, the plot looks like a mix of high school story and Young-Adult-SF, as the young people discover the alien ship and the technology to decipher partially, on the toss the brightest minds of science for decades. That day they go to the school, to keep hidden their newly developed, Savant-like skills, and honest behavior than any other pubescent in this age group, acts sometimes unrealistic. Also some twists of the plot, as the religious fanatics act, something constructed. This affects also the tension, and by the middle of the book remains unclear where moves the plot.
Then the story takes on momentum, as engage more other parties to the action and come up with torture, murder, threat of rape, religious fanaticism, terrorism and illicit research and human experiments darker elements into play which make it clear that the story despite its is not necessarily suitable for young beginning. At the same time, the voltage increases almost by leaps and bounds, leaving a at a rapid cat-and-mouse game no longer going on, in which the young people their pursuers by a nose are always ahead, while continuing to maintain the same outside their inconspicuous facade.
