Engaged for the new Score Michael Giacchino makes his work not only good, he takes the surviving heir of Goldsmith, Horner and Co. with a lot of autonomy and experimentation friends. He avoids but if possible, a known pieces from the previous films to use. His music is refreshingly young, fast and still has a certain retro style.
With the first minutes of the film the audience is soon clear: you will notice an entirely new wind or sound. The introduction ("Star Trek" and "Nailin 'the Kelvin") with dominant wind instruments and strings used in the background promotes adrenaline steeply upward. This is followed by a quieter, almost heartbreaking melody ("Labor of Love"), which carries a noticeable sadness in itself and ends with a wonderful finale.
But the tonal biggest impression leaves Track No. 5 ("Enterprising Women"), ignites an emotional fireworks both at the Camera title of "Star Trek" and at the first sight of the USS Enterprise. Hammerhart drönende drums, loud trumpets and bright sounding strings bring immediate onset goose bumps. A fantastic new beginning and a worthy "replacement" for Goldsmiths main topic.
Every now and then as well as certain basic features of the Classic Series are recognize. Thus, the theme to the film villain Nero in its "simplicity" a certain resemblance to Musikelemten that I made the TOS episode "Balance of Terror" (OT: "Balance of Terror") know. Ever sounds Giacchinos description for evil similar to what is to hear from the series, whenever was a threat to the Enterprise crew in coming.
The remaining Soundtrack also convinced. Very varied (quiet and punchy pieces alternately) and ST standards very unusual starting points to underline the action packed scenes in the film. Very epic !!!
As a little treat for the old fans, there are still Alexander Courage's old TOS issue that has been acoustically glorious "souped up" and with great choral use a new, never held for possible "gloss" wins. The best thing about the familiar Giacchino stands out, not without reason on the very end, because only the end of the film to us so familiar Crew is finally complete and united, and thus only "earned" the series-typical music.
Michael Giacchino dissolves from the chains of the past and brings fresh and unfamiliar music into audible aged ST universe, and this new direction it had also urgently needed. That the score was not honored with an Oscar nomination, can be explained with the fact that Giacchino has made with his work on "top" itself to the competition. After all, for the Pixar-strips he was awarded the Golden Boy. And rightly so.
Many pieces from "Star Trek" are fast becoming earwigs, and therefore it is only significant that the soundtrack since its appearance often rotated in the car in front of him, when I'm on my way to work. * G *
A similarly massive and catchy score I ask for the intended 2012 ST next movie. And that Giacchino indeed remains on board !!!
