Nestor Burma in SS

Nestor Burma in SS

The Berlin Trilogy (Paperback)

Customer Review

The re-release includes three episodes of the series that features a private taste of Philip Marlowe, the smell of Nestor Burma (that of the TV rather than the original Leo) but with hints of Gestapo since the series happening in Berlin, before and after war.
It also evokes the cover with a photo that swear pulled boxes of Leni Riefenstahl, the ambiguity photographer Reich disorders subjects, the kind a healthy mind in a healthy body ...
The first episode, Summer Crystal, takes place in 1936 during the Olympic Games in Berlin (filmed by Leni Riefenstahl precisely) on the rise of the National Socialist party.
The title VO (March purple) evokes "the violets of March 1933" when flourished all spontaneous Adhesions NAZI party, and when traficotait for a "small" membership number proving its long fidelity to the doctrine fashionable.
The private is Bernie Gunther (former cop, former detective Hotel Adlon, aah the Adlon in Berlin ...) that brags with a wry humor and prances with a beautiful unconsciousness between SS monsters or legs Gestapo.
We even will cross Goering turning a social evening or Himmler at a funeral.
Bernie trying to stay afloat in these waters foul scratching passing all profiteers of the new regime.
In the footsteps of Bernie Berlin is traversed in every direction, the Friedrichstrasse and Kurfürstendamm in the Schöneberg district in Kreuzberg, forgetting for a moment what horror sinks the beautiful capital.
But the radio to remind us of the dark realities.
That's the whole point of this book as we delve into Berlin's daily life just before the war and show us the smallest cogs in the Nazi mechanical running.
Edifying and instructive.
The second episode, The pale, brings us in 1938 when Germany invaded the Sudetenland.
This adventure is more conventional: the private reinstated the official police, for a time, and on the trail of a serial killer ... and those of the propaganda that prepares Kristallnacht ...
The last episode, A German Requiem, propels us in 1947 at the end of the war, where we find Bernie, married (yes, really!) In Berlin in ruins.
A Berlin devastated survivors where women try to survive and where the fear of the Russian soldiery is the rule.
Thus, following Bernie to Vienna (Austria) in full denazification, when the Americans are trying to recover the "best elements" to form German, facing the Soviets, the espionage forces that will soon be the heyday of the Cold War.
But Bernie keeps his sense of humor and his Berlin condescension that is not unlike our own Parisian arrogance!
An excellent idea to re-edit these three episodes, exciting, relevant, addictive, that improve our understanding of the Germany before, during and after.
The visit is completed, do not forget the guide! His name is Philip Kerr Ballantyne (or Bernie, it depends).
